Dell quietly intros AMD-based notebook

After desktops and servers, Dell has now expanded its AMD-based system lineup with the introduction of a new Inspiron 1501 notebook. The machine is available in three variants, the cheapest starting at $549 with a Mobile Sempron 3500+ processor, and the most expensive priced at $1,043 ($859 discounted) with a Turion 64 MK-36. Dual-core Turion 64 X2 TL-50 and TL-56 chips are also available as options for a few extra bucks.

Processors aside, the Inspiron 1501 dons a 15.4" 1280x800 wide-screen display and includes between 512MB and 1GB of DDR2-533 RAM, either 60GB or 80GB of hard drive space, and an ATI Radeon Xpress 1150 integrated graphics chipset. Indeed, while Dell selected Nvidia chipsets for its AMD-based Dimension desktops, the PC maker got parts from the newly-acquired ATI for the Inspiron 1501. Since it now owns ATI, AMD may be able to offer discounts on processor and chipset bundles to companies like Dell.
