S3 preps DirectX 10 graphics chips
by Geoff Gasior — 3:12 PM on August 29, 2007

S3's bid to become a strong third player in the graphics card market hasn't gone well, but the company hasn't given up yet. Xbit Labs reports that S3 is priming budget DirectX 10-class Chrome 430 and 460 graphics chips that are set to be released before the end of the year. Both chips apparently feature native support for HDMI and HDCP, and the Chrome 460 will supposedly adhere to the DirectX 10.1 spec.

Interestingly, S3's new GPUs won't be manufactured by industry favorites TSMC or UMC. Fujitsu will handle chip fabrication, with the Chrome 430 built using older 90nm process technology and the 460 apparently scheduled for the 65nm node.
