We've been hearing rumors about the so-called "Google phone" for months, and now DigiTimes has another nugget of information about the purported device. Citing moles at Taiwanese handset makers, the site says Google has definite plans to launch a phone but has yet to settle on the device's specifications, operating system, and manufacturer, as well as an eventual operator.
Google was previously expected to go for an EDGE chipset from Texas Instruments, but DigiTimes says "recent developments" suggest the search giant is now considering a 3G solution from Qualcomm. If Google were to opt for the latter, the move could force it to postpone the Google phone's launch from the second half of this year to the first half of 2008.
DigiTimes' sources say High Tech Computer (a.k.a. HTC) will likely land the contract to manufacture Google phones. On the software front, Google will supposedly enter the market with an in-house operating system "to compete with Windows Mobile and Symbian platforms."
