Microsoft mulls Blu-ray support for the Xbox 360

With Warner, Sony, Fox, Disney, and Lionsgate now all in the Blu-ray camp and only Universal and Paramount left on the HD DVD side, Microsoft is starting to look like it backed the wrong horse by offering an HD DVD drive for its Xbox 360. But despite being part of the HD DVD group, Microsoft isn't entirely opposed to the prospect of adding Blu-ray support to the 360, according to a report by Reuters.

The news agency quotes Xbox Group Marketing Manager Albert Penello as saying, "It should be consumer choice; and if that's the way they vote, that's something we'll have to consider," regarding the possibility of a Blu-ray accessory for the console. That said, Penello doesn't believe Warner's decision to forsake HD DVD will have much of a bearing on console sales. "I fundamentally don't think ... this has a significant impact on Xbox 360 versus (Sony's) PlayStation 3," he stated.
