In what could be it death throes, the HD DVD camp has slashed prices in an effort to lure customers while Paramount and Universal are still releasing HD DVD movies. As Engadget reports, Toshiba has reduced the prices of its HD DVD players.
Since yesterday, Toshiba's HD-A3 player has gone down to $149.99, the higher-end HD-A30 model (which supports 1080p output) has dipped to $199.99, and the top-of-the-line HD-A35 is $299.99. The devices were previously priced at a respective $299.99, $399.99, and $499.99.
Toshiba is also offering five free HD DVDs with each player, and Amazon is running an HD DVD sale in which HD DVD titles are available for as low as $14.99—half their normal prices. To be fair, Engadget points out that Amazon is also running a sale on Blu-ray movies, although prices there are higher on average than in the HD DVD selection.
