Intel cuts prices, pins Core 2 Quad Q6600 at $193

Say hello to Intel's first sub-$200 quad-core desktop processor. The world's biggest CPU maker has updated its price list with discounts on four of its desktop offerings, bringing the Core 2 Quad Q6600 down from $224 to just $193 and repositioning three dual-core chips:

The Core 2 Quad Q6600 should now be a few bucks cheaper than AMD's 2.5GHz Phenom 9850 Black Edition, while Core 2 Duos E8500 and E8400 will fight it out among triple-core AMD products like the Phenom X3 8750.

A quick look at Newegg shows the Q6600 already selling for $199.99, while the E8500 is down to $209.99 $199.99, and E8400 has slipped to $179.99—not quite as low as the numbers in Intel's price list, but then again, the "official" prices pertain to 1,000-unit quantities of CPUs. As for the Core 2 Duo E7200, it's still sitting pretty at $129.99.

Update: The Core 2 Duo E8500 is now $199.99 at Newegg.
