Last week, we noted that Expreview had nabbed information about a high-end Nvidia chipset for future 45nm AMD processors. Today, the Chinese site is back with news of what Nvidia may have in store for low-end 45nm Phenom systems.
Expreview says Nvidia is prepping two low-end chipsets for an early 2009 release: the MCP85-S and MCP85-V. Both offerings will supposedly include DirectX 10-class integrated graphics, Hybrid SLI capabilities, support for AMD's Advanced Clock Calibration (ACC) tech, and 20 second-generation PCI Express lanes split between one x16 link and four x1s. In fact, Expreview's comparative table suggests both products will have nearly identical specs—just higher performance and PureVideo HD support for the MCP85-S. Oh, and both models will accommodate Socket AM2, AM2+, and AM3 processors.
Motherboards based on these two MCPs will succeed current GeForce 8000-series boards, Expreview hints, so sub-$100 price tags should be standard fare. The presence of ACC might make things interesting, though. As we wrote in our review of AMD's 790GX chipset, ACC can considerably improve the overclocking potential of current Phenom CPUs. Coupled with hypothetical 45nm Black Edition Phenoms, MCP85 boards could make fine platforms for cash-strapped enthusiasts.
