Faster top-of-the-line Core i7 could be in the works

The Core i7-965 Extreme Edition has been out for barely three months and has nothing remotely resembling competition from AMD, yet Intel could already be working on a successor. At least, that's what the folks at Turkish tech site DonanimHaber seem to be saying—and they've posted a CPU-Z screenshot as evidence.

According to the screenshot, this successor will be dubbed the Core i7-975 Extreme Edition, and it will run at 3.33GHz out of the box. Incidentally, the screenshot shows the processor overclocked to a blistering 5.26GHz with the core voltage at 1.5V.

If we can trust the automated Google translation, DonanimHaber says the new flagship CPU may come out in June. A relatively small speed bump over the 3.2GHz Core i7-965 may not be anything to write home about, but the introduction of a new high-end chip could mean price cuts down the Core i7 line. At least, that's what tends to happen when Intel demotes an "Extreme" CPU in the Core 2 family. (Thanks to VR-Zone for the link.)
