Nvidia's new GeForce GTS 250 1GB looked like a pretty decent deal for the $150 suggested retail price. That said, the card doesn't come out until March 10, and AMD seems to have made some pretty aggressive price cuts over the past few days.
In late January, we were surprised to see a Radeon HD 4870 512MB selling for $180. Today, Newegg offers a Sapphire variant of AMD's mid-range wonder for $164.99 with free shipping. Factor in the $15 mail-in rebate the e-tailer offers, and you can end up paying only 150 bucks for the card.
If you've read our review, you'll know the 4870 512MB typically outperforms the GeForce GTS 250 1GB at resolutions up to and including 1920x1200, despite the fact that it has less memory onboard. You can attribute that difference in large part to GDDR5 memory, which provides the AMD offering with (considerably) higher memory bandwidth.
