By now, you might have seen the "Zune HD" renders that have been floating around gadget sites lately. Microsoft hasn't announced anything just yet, but CNet News blogger Matt Rosoff believes the company has more than just a new player in the works.
Rosoff spotted an AdWeek article that says Microsoft has asked ad agencies to compete on an assignment regarding a "new mobile application." The agencies include McCann Erickson, Crispin Porter + Bogusky (the folks behind the new Windows ad campaign), and JWT, and the competition in which they're taking part is reportedly code-named "Pink."
The blogger goes on to point out that both ZDNet's Mary-Jo Foley and CNBC have associated the Pink code name with Zune software for handsets (or an all-out Zune phone). Foley in particular says Pink is "a set of consumer-focused premium services" for Windows Mobile, Microsoft's cell-phone software platform.
In any case, we should find out what the fuss is about soon enough. AdWeek claims Microsoft's ad competition will end in May, and Rosoff expects an announcement "by the middle of the summer."
