HP's dv2 is getting some more competition in the not-quite-a-netbook, not-quite-a-proper-laptop arena. MSI's X340 ultra-slim notebook has arrived in U.S. stores, and Newegg currently has it in stock for $799.99.
The X340 has a 13.4" display with a 1366x768 resolution, so it's a little larger than your typical netbook. With a thickness of just 0.24-0.78" and a weight of 2.86 lbs, however, it's actually lighter and more slender—even compared to 10" Eee PCs like the 1000HE.
You get a pretty decent selection of components, too: a 1.4GHz single-core Intel Core 2 Solo SU3500, 2GB of DDR2-800 RAM, Intel GMA 4500MHD graphics (with an HDMI output port), a 320GB mechanical hard drive, 802.11n, Bluetooth 2.0, and a copy of Windows Vista Home Premium.
The system's Achilles' heel might well be its default four-cell battery, though MSI says it does offer an optional eight-cell model. Still, four battery cells probably aren't enough to beat the 1000HE's impressive seven-hour longevity, especially considering the X340's bigger display and power-hungrier hardware.
