AMD has been making Black Edition processors with unlocked multipliers for about two years now, while Intel has continued to lock multipliers on all but its expensive Extreme Edition processors. Could the status quo be about to change? Expreview has found an odd specimen at a retail store in Guangzhou, China: a purportedly unlocked dual-core Pentium.
Photos show a label identifying this processor as a Pentium E6500K with a 2.93GHz stock clock speed, 2MB of L2 cache, and a 1,066MHz front-side bus. The package is blue and black, and Expreview says it bears the word "unlocked" (presumably in Chinese, because we can't see that in English in any of the photos).
Expreview claims you can grab the processor in a bundle with a Biostar TP45E motherboard for the equivalent of $190. The mobo costs $117 alone, so you're getting that CPU for just $73. The same report goes on to say Intel's roadmaps position this CPU at $84, though.
If this all sounds familiar, it's because in June, other sources forecast the arrival of a plain Pentium E6500 with identical specs and an $84 price tag. There was no mention of an unlocked multiplier, though. Perhaps Intel has two different versions of the same CPU up its sleeve.
