Microsoft pulls out of Family Guy special

You know that Microsoft-sponsored Family Guy special we wrote about a couple of weeks ago? Yeah, it's not happening. According to Variety, Microsoft pulled the plug after executives saw the show's taping on October 16. Why, you might ask?

Well, while the special did pimp Windows 7, it also included jokes about subjects of varying tastelessness, from the Holocaust to feminine hygiene. A Microsoft rep commented, "We initially chose to participate in the Seth and Alex variety show based on the audience composition and creative humor of 'Family Guy,' but after reviewing an early version of the variety show, it became clear that the content was not a fit with the Windows brand."

That leaves one to wonder if Microsoft really knew what it was getting into when it signed up. Those familiar with Family Guy ought to know such jokes are pretty much par for the course in the show—and definitely not the most tasteless Seth MacFarlane and his cast have come up with over the years. The show poked fun at Bill Gates a few times, too.

In the end, the special will air on November 8, but without Microsoft sponsorship. Variety says it's not clear who the next sponsor will be or how the cast will work around existing, pre-taped parts that contain Windows 7 promotional material.
