Step aside, Grand Theft Auto IV. As the AP reports, Infinity Ward's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has taken the crown of biggest entertainment launch ever, racking up 4.7 million sales within its first 24 hours of availability in the United States and United Kingdom alone.

Rockstar North's GTA IV, which previously held the title, only managed 3.6 million sales worldwide on its opening day. The AP quotes revenue of $310 million for both titles, although that figure applies to worldwide sales for GTA IV but U.S. and British sales only for Modern Warfare 2.

By comparison, Box Office Mojo says The Dark Knight only made around $158 million during its opening weekend in mid-July.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 takes place five years after the first Modern Warfare game, and it features similar contemporary combat in settings that range from the Afghan desert to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and the eastern United States. The game came out on November 10 for the PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3.
