AMD scores business desktop win
AMD's Athlon XP processors have been the price/performance choice among computer enthusiasts for some time now, and now it looks like one of the "Big Three's" business lines is finally hopping on the bandwagon:
HP plans to use AMD's flagship chip in its new Compaq Evo D315, targeting the education, government and small-to-medium business market. The release of the new computer marks the first time that one of the "Big Three" PC makers--IBM, HP and Dell Computer--has adopted Athlon in a business desktop.Getting into one of Compaq's desktop products is a big win for the Athlon, but what's more interesting is the fact that HP is also looking very closely at Hammer. It takes a while to build credibility with the major PC manufacturers, but Hammer-based servers and workstations from either HP or IBM don't seem like such a pipe dream anymore. But I'd still be shocked if Dell decided to offer anything with an AMD processor inside.
HP's line of Itanium-based workstations and servers make it unclear where Hammer could fit into the picture, but running AMD and Intel-based products alongside each other might be an interesting way to do things.
