HP tips Athlon 64 for Media Center Edition PC
HP has always had a bit of a soft spot for AMD, and it's now using an Athlon 64 processor in one of its Media Center Edition systems. Advertisements for the system are even touting the Athlon 64's "advanced antivirus protection," otherwise known as the NX bit.
Although the Pentium 4 still has a video encoding performance advantage over the Athlon 64, Prescott's toasty tendencies require more aggressive and ultimately louder cooling solutions that may be less appropriate for home theater and Media Center Edition PCs. 64-bit encoding apps could improve the Athlon 64's performance, too, but there's no word on whether Microsoft plans to offer a 64-bit version of Media Center Edition.
