AMD announces Athlon 64 X2 dual-core desktop chips

In addition to launching its dual-core Opteron processors, AMD has also detailed its dual-core desktop plans. The dual-core desktop chip will be known as the Athlon 64 X2 and be available in the following models:

Athlon 64 X2 chips will plug into existing 939-pin sockets, although compatibility will likely be limited to motherboards that currently support AMD's 90-nano Athlon 64 processors. The chips won't be available for a while yet, though. AMD is currently sampling X2 chips to OEMs and will formally launch the processor in June.

AMD will continue to push its single-core Athlon 64 FX chip until games become more multi-threaded. An Athlon 64 FX-57 at 2.8GHz is expected to arrive in late June.
