Cell processor gets Linux kernel support
by Geoff Gasior — 2:34 AM on March 22, 2006

Support for the Cell processor has been added to the latest 2.6.16 version of the Linux kernel. That's good news for IBM and Mercury, which have both shown Cell-based blade servers. Robust Cell support under Linux could also have interesting ramifications for the PlayStation 3. Sony President Ken Kutaragi has long maintained that the PS3 will run Linux, and it was recently confirmed that the console will ship with a 60GB hard drive. With a reasonable hard drive and Linux support out of the box, the PlayStation 3 could become an interesting basis for homebrew media center systems.
