Matsuo Basho (1640-1694?)

the Heron's Shriek

or his other Haiku poem

What you call a haiku is very far from what is means.
Haiku means "beginning verse", and it does not have to follow the 17 syllabe structure. wihcih is the opnly prerequiste for a haiku. not the 5-7-5, it can be 1-15-1 also well if form is maintained.

Neither of your haiku were 17 syllables at all. Want to try again?

Just what exactly makes a haiku, oh sage master?

The mighty point was, to consider that the 2 example haikus are

variations on the accepted standard. They are poems, Poetry should

never be treated as prose(normal writting). The 5-7-5 argument is only a

extension of prose. Poetry has a far more fluid form or even no

form. So, if grammar comes into play in a poem, please remember

poetic liesnce. :D

Not all poetry is haiku. A large portion of poetry is *much* more structured than most prose. Rules determine the type of poem. You can write something that is haiku-like but does not follow haiku rules. It's still poetry, but not strictly haiku.

Now then, let's relax,
write non-imposted haiku
and enjoy the peace.

Christ Almighty....

Wrong.

There is no "variation on the accepted standard." If there is a variation, its not a haiku. Its a regular poem.

1. A Japanese lyric verse form having three unrhymed lines of five, seven, and five syllables, traditionally invoking an aspect of nature or the seasons.
2. A poem written in this form.

http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=haiku

The 5-7-5 is what makes it a haiku. If it doesn't follow the 5-7-5, its NOT a haiku. If it has a 1-15-1, its NOT a haiku. If it rhymes, its NOT a haiku. The 2 examples are NOT haiku's. They're poems. Everything else is just a poem. It can be a poem and not be a haiku.

And I don't even like poetry!

Mostly true idchafee but not quite true. One of Ithkul's posts was actually correct. Basho wrote haiku that were not standard and he's considered one of the greatest who ever lived at it.
