We are all alone
Even in togetherness
We stand as but one

'Lonely is the world
It's a long way to nowhere
Only road I know'

(Those preceding words
The legendary Dio
Of Black Sabbath fame)

Look into the eyes
Reflections from far away
Join me -- go away!

Stand with no one else
Be like the lone desert shrub
Not the stalk of grass

Haiku: a poem
Syllables: five, seven, five
In order, three lines

A Japanese art;
To ponder sacred wonder;
Reflect on the world

Evoke thoughtfulness:
Use the haiku to speak here
Find your inner peace

Sci-Fi author John Scalzi (Old Man's War) is hosting a contest on his blog to be a redshirt in the novel he's writing. Entries must be haiku. Details here:

http://whatever.scalzi.com/2011/01/12/b ... a-contest/

Here's mine (only relevant if you read his rules):

Coherent light stabs
winter is briefly summer
I slump to the floor
In those days spirits were brave, the stakes were high, men were real men, women were real women and small furry creatures from Alpha Centauri were real small furry creatures from Alpha Centauri.

Haikus are easy
But sometimes they don't make sense
Refrigerator

(not original, but a classic)

[fixed line 1 ... how embarrassing]

Which also is INVALID since the first sentence only contains 4 syllables. A valid first sentence in a haiku, requires by law, 5 syllables, no exceptions! (5-7-5)

The word "Haiku" has 2 syllables, pronounced like HI - KU ... go to this site to hear it for yourself: http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/haiku

Now. Back to the legit haiku's.

Cold and wet, i shiver now
Alone in the night.
