I beg to differ. As you've pretty much just pointed out, it seems that most of the time he's making this music as much for himself as for anyone else. It's the music he wants (or needs!) to make to satisfy his own inner muse, with little or no regard for fame or commercial potential.

That's pretty much a textbook definition of self-indulgent behavior.

Absolutely! And I wasn't implying that self-indulgent is bad! At least, not inherently. I like some of his faster stuff some of the time, and I like other music with self-indulgent wankery (like the aforementioned Returning We Hear The Larks). A lot of what I've heard of Buckethead seems to focus on that though, and it gets tiresome after awhile.

He's definitely an amazing guitarist, probably one of the best ever! I didn't mean to somehow denigrate him as a musician.

Just finished: Alex Machacek - Fat

Now playing: Percy Jones, Scott McGill, Ritchie DeCarlo - (self-titled)

For any other aging prog/fusion-heads out there, the second one is the answer to the question "Hey, what's Percy Jones been up to lately, anyway?"

An updated version of Genesis' pro-shot video (on 16mm film) at Shepperton Studios in late October 1973 (actual dates fuzzy with time). Audio recorded separately and added to the cleaned-up 16mm. Audio is great and whoever worked on the 16mm is an artiste as this show has never looked better. Also included is direct visual evidence (12:04, 28:40) that Steve Hackett either invented tapping or was one of the first to use it.

I started watching and thought "God, they look so young" (especially Phil) then realized that this performance is now more than 40 years old.

And yes, those are Shure SM58s.

Here's the Lyceum Theatre, May 7, 1980, on the Duke tour. The last hurrah for Genesis as a prog band. I so wish there was video from the October 13, 1978 show at Chicago's Uptown Theatre (the last-ever full version of Dancing With the Moonlit Knight) but I have to be happy with the audio.

OK, let's hear it for contraltos. No, I'm not a fan of opera (where the term originated), but I've concluded that I'm a total sucker for contemporary female vocalists whose voices fall in that range. I'm sifting through my music collection and making a playlist of my favorites that feature this type of vocal.

Some examples:

- Mary Fahl. Former lead singer for October Project (their first two albums are excellent, mostly because of her vocals). She's also released two solo projects -- "The Other Side of Time" was disappointing due to rather weak material; however the other one, "From The Dark Side of the Moon", is an amazing contemporary cover of the entire Pink Floyd album. Not better than the original, but different... in a good way.

- Suze DeMarchi. Lead singer for the Aussie band Baby Animals. BA's self-titled debut album (from many years back) is one of my "desert island discs". After a mediocre sophomore effort they broke up. They've recently gotten back together, and their comeback album "This Is Not The End" is pretty good. Her solo effort from a decade or so ago, "Telelove", is decent but probably not worth seeking out unless you're in love with her voice like I am. (Trivia: Was married to Nuno Bettencourt, lead guitarist for the hair/prog metal band Extreme... whose album "III Sides" also makes my "desert island disc" list, but for entirely different reasons. Lyrics of the 1st track on the new BA album sounds like they may be about their divorce... heh.)

- Happy Rhodes. Obscure cult folk/electronica/prog musician with a 4-octave vocal range that sounds like Annie Lennox on the low end, Kate Bush on the high end.

- Fiona Apple. OK, so she's gone off the deep end lately and will likely end up being one more entry on the long list of young musicians who peaked early, then crashed and burned. But her debut album "Tidal" still gives me chills. Holy crap. Second album's decent too. After that it just gets... kinda weird. But I still love her voice.

- Sass Jordan. Bluesy, clearly a Janis Joplin wannabee of sorts. Her hard rockin' early '90s releases "Racine" and "Rats" might make my "desert island discs" list depending on how long you let me make it.

Heh. Well, it is still a pretty safe bet that we are the only two people in the world who own both of those *and* the entire Djam Karet back catalog!

Ronald Jenkees. Just grabbed "Days Away" from Amazon. The genre is electronic with some dub-step like elements in there. I recommend "Magnetic Moment" "Early Morning May" and "Piano Wire."

A few of the tracks from this have *really* grown on me, there are some really great songs here. Standouts include the opener "Karma", "Psychic", and "Fresh".

On deck in the playlist is the album "Veritas", from the Alex Skolnick Trio. Probably best known as a founding member of thrash metal band Testament, Skolnick has also played with Trans-Siberian Orchestra, the funk-fusion band Attention Deficit (AD's 2nd album "The Idiot King" is one of my desert island discs), and his eponymous jazz trio. AST has been around for over a decade, and used to do mostly jazz covers of hard rock and metal classics; but "Veritas" is nearly all original material (the lone cover is Metallica's "Fade To Black"), and IMO is their strongest album to date. I was never much of a Testament fan, but I love a lot of what Skolnick has done outside of the band that made him famous!

Edit:

He Loved Him Madly by Miles Davis (Bill Laswell Remix from Panthalassa; original version from Get Up With It.)
I think it makes good music for a requiem so this one is for you Nelson:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zgM8907oEbA

The original version is 32 minutes and personally I skip the first 11 minutes so keep that in mind if you listen to the original which is also on YT but in multiple parts.
