Craig David and Sting - Rise and Fall

The song that led me to this a few years ago was "Shape of my heart" by Sting as the theme song to the movie "Leon: The Professional" with Natalie Portman when she was a little kid and Jean Reno as "The Professional". If you haven't seen this movie, check it the heck out!

Fleetwood Mac - Oh, Well, from Then Play On.

Real Mac, back in the Peter Green days when they were but a blues outfit. Oh Well ends in a lovely 6-minute classical guitar composition that could easily be the score for the three-way standoff in The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly.

Been a while since I spun up the turntable.

Tommy Emmanuel - Lewis & Clark (one of the prettiest acoustic guitar pieces of all time, iyam)
John Butler Trio - Ocean (I'd be surprised if this hasn't found its way here yet, but... wow)

@thegleek: I want that album now. Did you check out Glimmer or Pye Audio Corner's stuff? Do you like that kinda thing?

If you like that, you may like the album Glimmer by Michał Jacaszek (full-length track previews available there). A friend has the marbled vinyl of that and I'm pretty envious. I think she'd notice if I swiped it... You might also like The Black Mill Tapes Volume 3 from Pye Audio Corner. I especially like Electronic Rhythm Number Five from that album, but I'm a sucker for infectious thumpy loops.

Yes. Not bad. Much of it was boring. Some of it intrigued me.

PJ Harvey - Down By The Water

@thegleek: I agree. I've gotten to see them twice, and they just kill it. More so the second time at Cain's then the first, but that's the difference between headlining your own tour and a festival.

Though I've never seen Yo La Tengo live, my vote for the best live band is Sigur Rós.

Best live band? Simple.

The Who.

Summer of 1989; their 25th anniversary tour. It had already been announced that Pete's hearing problems would mean he'd only be playing acoustic; no electric. 70,000 people in the old Meadowlands Stadium in NJ and the concert opens with the Overture to Tommy. That alone is enough to raise 70,000 drunk & stoned music fans to a fever pitch, but when Pete grabs his electric and starts windmilling while the band plays at least 75% of Tommy (way too out of mind at that show to keep track of the set list) there are 70,000 people who, in that moment, would have done anything Pete asked/told them to do. I've been to shows with far better musicianship but nothing I've ever seen before or since welded that many people into a single mass willing to do whatever needed to keep the music flowing.

The Stones were a bunch of choreographed nancy-boys (Montreal Olympic Stadium - Steel Wheels Tour) compared to The Who.

Yes but they're often terrible mono tracks or tracks with lots of constant dripping/gushing.

I need a thunderstorm recording critic.

How does one getting into this artist even know where to begin???

Well, Tom flies all over the map in terms of style. Some albums are pretty much straight-up blues and jazziness, like Closing Time, Heart of Saturday Night, and Heartattack and Vine. Then some of his other work gets very theatrical, like it was written to be a musical... in fact, Frank's Wild Years WAS written to be a musical! :) The Black Rider has a similar theatricality.

Then there's stuff that's either just damn strange, like Bone Machine, in which he creates some fascinating music with non-musical soundin' noise. Then there's the mix-it-up albums, like Swordfishtrombone or Rain Dogs, in which some songs are strange, nigh-experimental, and others are more conventional jazz/blues/chillin' light rock kinda stuff.

I recommend Swordfishtrombone or Rain Dogs next. Or maybe Small Change... the titular song on that album is one of my favorites, even though it's basically just a quiet slow sax and Tom muttering about some hood what got got.

One of the blogs I read has just had a "worst earworm of the '70's thread". Contestants so far are:

Michael Murphy - Wildfire
Paper Lace - The Night Chicago Died
Starland Vocal Band - Afternoon Delight
Terry Jacks - Seasons in the Sun
Bo Donaldson - Billy, Don't be a Hero
Blue Swede - Hooked on a Feeling
Henry Gross - Shannon

Anyone here have some period-specific suggestions?

EDIT: It's shameful to realize how many of these songs I sang in grade-school and middle-school chorus.

EDIT 2: Like Wildfire, there's another supernatural horse song from the same era whose name/artist escapes me at the moment. It's not Jesse Colin Young, but someone in the same style.

A Pale Horse Named Death - Die Alone. Holy crap, I love this song.

As a big fan of both Type O Negative and Life of Agony, I was surprised that I haven't heard about this band until today given that it has both Sal Abruscato (drummer for Life of Agony, original drummer for Type O Negative) and Johnny Kelly (replaced Sal in Type O Negative). I had already heard of Seventh Void, which has Kenny Hickey and Johnny Kelly in their ranks, as well as Matt Brown who is also in APHND. Both are really damn good, but I think I'm digging APHND more right now.
