Re: What are you listening to RIGHT NOW?

Been listening to pretty much everything that's on my iPod thats hooked up to my car. Currently in the middle of a bit of a road trip from one side of Australia to the other, about 2,500 km into it and hopefully will get to my destination tomorrow night. Set myself the challenge to only listen to each playlist/album only once :)

Never really listened to much Radiohead, but it's a great song.

"Boys for Pele", by Tori Amos

Arguably the least commercial material she's ever done (possibly except for her latest release "Night of Hunters"), there's just something about it that really grabs me. Everything from the sparse stripped down arrangements of many of the tracks, to the non-traditional instrumentation and virtuoso performances (her harpsichord playing on "Blood Roses" just blows me away), to the sheer oddness of some of it ("Mr Zebra"... WTF?!??), all combine to create something which is much more than the sum of its parts.

Easily my favorite Tori Amos album.

"It's Alive" by Buckethead

I happened to be on Amazon, and their recommendation algorithm suggested it "based on my browsing history"... I generally like Buckethead, so I grabbed the MP3 download. This is Buckethead in (mostly) full-on metal mode, with very little of the goofy s*** and off-the-wall experiments he tends to sprinkle some of his albums with.

Recommended for Buckethead fans, and fans of instrumental metal in general. My only complaint is it's rather short (about 30 minutes); but I'll take quality over quantity!

The Tragically Hip, live from the Avalon Ballroom in Los Angeles, 6 October 2004. A great recording and one that is sold as DRM-free FLAC right from the Hip's own website. There's six shows available there and they're all good.

Listening to Karmakanic's album Who's The Boss In The Factory?. Excellent Prog Rock album, sound is excellent, and the band is very tight. It sounds a lot like The Flower Kings, understandably since many of its members plays on that album. Recommended! :D

That's some way dated stuff there... obscure music at that too...

from a 2006 compilation called: "Tough Texas - 1953-1957 Boppin' Billy & Rockers"

NM, it seems you have left out the complete artist/group name (and misspelled BIF) with your post... The artist in this case is BIF NAKED.

The Life Aquatic Studio Sessions by Seu Jorge.

Money Jungle Duke Ellington, Charles Mingus, and Max Roach

And then, listen to the entire 4 disk Bob Marley box set, Songs of Freedom

I'm sure many are familiar with it, but it's basically in a sort of chronological order starting from the early 60's when Marley recorded under the name Bobby Martel. It ends with "Redemption Song" live from Pittsburgh shortly before Marley's death.

Some of the stuff I listen to is kind of out there too, just in a different way from the stuff you tend to listen to. Hey, I managed to get Captain Ned into Djam Karet; that's gotta count for something!

Given that most of my collection is prog (Genesis, Yes, Tull, ELP, King Crimson, Floyd, Nektar, etc.) it was simply that I'd never heard of Djam Karet until you slid me the link. And yes, I did buy their complete discography once I heard a few samples. Djam Karet is one of 3 bands whose complete discography is on my Zune, Genesis & Tull being the others (with some ROIO additions as well).

EDIT: I see from their website that I've got more purchases to make.

That just strikes me as so unusual. To be limited to under 10 artists/groups without being exposed to 10,000 other artists waiting to be discovered if you have an open mind. :-?

You're right. I don't go looking for new material as I'm quite content with what I have, but am open to ideas when they're sent my way. As I've aged I've found myself pulling back from the edges and concentrating on the music I collected and knew when I was 18 to 30, roughly.

Also, the groups I listed were simply those prog-rock outfits that can be heard in Djam Karet's stuff if you listen closely. My overall music collection is far more diverse.

np, so with their extensive discography:

1985 - No Commercial Potential
1989 - The Ritual Continues
1989 - Reflections From The Firepool
1991 - Burning The Hard City
1991 - Suspension & Displacement
1994 - Collaborator
1997 - The Devouring
1999 - Live At Orion
2000 - Reflections From The Firepool
2001 - New Dark Age
2003 - A Night For Baku
2005 - Recollection Harvest
2010 - The Heavy Soul Sessions

How do I know where to even begin?

The Devouring is a pretty good intro to Djam Karet, IMO.

Suspension & Displacement and Collaborator showcase their more ambient side, while Burning The Hard City has a harder edge to it.

The Heavy Soul Sessions consists of reworked versions of material from other Djam Karet albums (mostly from the two albums preceding it).

IIRC Reflections From The Firepool is actually older than any of the other albums listed; 2000 must be a re-release date (I believe it was out of print for a number of years).
