Pearl Jam - Lightning Bolt

This is a great album. Upbeat and energetic. Reminds a bit of Vitalogy on some of the songs, which is great!

Rob Halford said that side 1 of Paranoid was the best heavy metal album ever made. Steven Tyler said that it was Back in Black.

Hey PenGun... care to recommend (or anti-recommend) any of the bazillion releases Buckethead has put out over the past few months? It's a bit overwhelming; no way I am going to get them all but I might pick up a few.

Gary Husband - Dirty And Beautiful, Volume 2

A diverse mix of instrumental covers and originals with various guest guitarists. Standouts include "Fred 2011" (with Allan Holdsworth on guitar, an updated version of a tune he did with Tony Williams Lifetime back in the '70s), "England Green" (a relatively short, but quite beautiful track with Jimmy Herring on guitar), and "Yesternow-Epilogue" (a bluesy Miles Davis cover with Robin Trower on axe).

Big thumbs up from me!

The new "Weird Al" Yankovic album, Mandatory Fun. It's pretty good. There are always some tracks that are not as good as the others, but I really liked the video for Tacky (though Happy is such an earworm, you should click with caution). I really hope the next video he releases (later this morning) will be his parody of "Blurred Lines" which...it kinda reminds me of Meadows.

Just saw in my RSS feed (old-school in these Twitter days, I know :) ) that Supergiant has released an extended soundtrack for Transistor which includes the alternate hummed versions. It is apparently available as a free update for those who already purchased the soundtrack. Haven't had time to start the game yet, but I'm really looking forward to playing it and listening to the soundtrack (loved Bastion's and still listen to it).

No Sleep (album) by Volumes

Some of the lyrics make little to no sense in this one, but I just love how the two vocalists blend together to create that aggressive yet strangely melodic growl. It's no Via but it's still Volumes and it's darn good.

Is That You?, by Bill Frisell.

This seems to be a rather polarizing album -- people either love it or hate it. I'm in the love it camp; to me, it neatly straddles the line between the random/chaotic/noisy stuff he did with John Zorn, and the more serene stuff he tended to favor later on. I think it is this dichotomy that infuriates some listeners; but I consider it to be a feature rather than a bug!

If you'd asked me 15 years ago, this would've probably made my "desert island discs" list. It wouldn't make the cut today (too much other great music released since then), but it is still one I come back to from time to time, like visiting an old friend.

The Alarm - "Electric Folklore Live".

The Alarm were/are a Welsh-based band who came up in the '80s as yet another U2-derived post-punk/alt-rock group, but they quickly expanded out of that rather confining box. I've always loved their sound and their vitality and commitment to the music are in epic display on this little tasty bit.

Rescue me, indeed.

Fleetwood Mac, Oh Well Part 2, from Then Play On.

Danny Kirwan's last Mac bits as this was the beginning of the transition from a blues band to the arena-rockers they became. It's all classical guitar and every time I listen to it I see the three-way standoff in "The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly". This is music that should have been in a "Clint movie".

Sheet and utter heresy. Was on the way back home just now from bringing daughter to jazz band practice and an ad for a bluegrass event in Lake Placid popped up on the radio. All of those festival ads play about 5 seconds from everyone, but one of those bits was from the holiest 4:43 ever committed to tape (IMO) by one of the all-time gods of guitar & music, namely Richard Thompson and "Vincent Black Lightning 1952". There's not a thing wrong with the original. When it plays on the radio or the Zune I know I need to pull over as I've never once sung along with Richard and not lost it in the last verse. I don't think I'll ever get there; the emotion Richard puts in is just too strong.

And some chuckle-head 20-something "newgrass" band turns it into a fast-paced bluegrass tune. I heard but 5 seconds but that was enough. I've been a Richard Thompson fan since he and his ex-wife Linda chronicled the downward spiral of their relationship on one of the best albums of the 1980's; Richard & Linda Thompson's "Shoot out the Lights" (1982). What's even more strange is that they toured the album very successfully even as the strife got worse.

Sounds similar to what happened with Fleetwood Mac's "Rumours". I guess some musicians need to have serious personal conflicts with their bandmates to be at their best musically. Aside from "Tusk" (which for the most part is just plain weird), FM's output since then has all been pretty bland.

Note to all you younger folk. If you hear the Rumours tune "The Chain" and do not grok that Lindsey and Stevie would rather hurl throwing knives at each other than to be in the same studio recording this song, you miss the frissance that makes great albums.
