Shelby Lynne – Just A Little Lovin’

Thanks for another great recommendation! I'm finding I like "Suit Yourself" better than "Just A Little Lovin'", but they're both good. And yes, the recording itself is very well done.

You should probably check out the (IMO excellent) album "Il Grande Silenzio" by the band Baby Animals. I have a feeling you'll really appreciate the vocalist (Suze Demarchi). This album is a stylistic departure from their other releases; they're nominally a hard rock band, but this one has a more laid back acoustic character to it. Their debut (self-titled) album is also one of my "desert island" discs; its track listing overlaps that of IGS but the arrangements couldn't be more different.

Madonna - Vogue on FM

Man, does this combination of 35 year old amp and tuner, 30 year old speakers, and 17 year old subwoofers have it all. Just tons of really good, smooth BASS!

It's pretty sad how much better my old basement stereo sounds than the 4 year old Klipsch/Pioneer surround system we use for TV. FM on the old system sounds better than FLAC on the modern system! Something about the newer rig just makes it harder on the ears when its really cranked up.

Egads, the latest Dream Theater album (it has been out since January, but I haven't been following them as closely since Portnoy left) is a 2+ hour double-CD concept album. Allmusic calls it an "exercise in excess" (but still gives it 4 stars), and it has generally been getting very positive reviews. I guess I'll have to check out this monstrosity.

Edit: While I'm ordering music, I'm also filling in some holes in my Blue Oyster Cult collection (I already have all of their studio stuff, but I'm missing a couple of the live albums).

Edit 2: Ahh, the "retro" fidelity of 1970s live albums... nostalgia. (I ordered the physical CDs, but I'm already listening to the Amazon "AutoRip" downloads.)

Edit 3: But even through the muddy mix, you can still hear how BOC became a cult (ha!) phenomenon before they'd ever had a hit single. Damn... these guys had energy... wish I'd seen them play live back in those days.

Started out looking for how to play Billy Joel's Summer Highland Falls on piano (not that I can play piano or anything, just couldn't fathom how he did it). But, after maybe 10 vids, that lead me to: The Eagles Farewell Tour. Overall, a most enjoyable tour thru YouTube music vids that I can recall in quite a while...

A mini-review based on my initial thoughts...

This isn't like anything else they've done. It's an ambitious "rock opera" on a much grander scale than Metropolis Part 2 (which would be the closest thing among their previous recorded work). By turns majestic, campy, and occasionally a little silly (naming the villain "Nafaryus"? c'mon...), it is nonetheless impeccably arranged, performed, and recorded.

Sure there are still trademark DT prog metal touches sprinkled throughout -- manic syncopated drum fills, impossibly fast swept-picked guitar arpeggios, dueling guitar/synth lines -- but instead of being the centerpiece they play more of an occasional supporting role. The focus is very much on the story, with the vocals, keyboards (lots of acoustic piano!), and choral/orchestral arrangements carrying a large share of the musical weight.

If you can imagine a mutant musical offspring of Dream Theater and Andrew Lloyd Webber, with a storyline that borrows liberally from the likes of Rush's 2112 and Game Of Thrones, you're in the right ballpark. Will this become my favorite DT album after additional listens? I doubt it. But the crazy thing is, it (mostly) works. They manage to pull it off.

Shoot, I need a nice long playlist of this stuff for the long drive back to CA in 2 weeks. Driving around with a friend at night while blasting obnoxious rap is fun, but only for so long.

Tori Amos - Scarlet's Walk

2002 release, and one of her better ones. If you were a fan of her early '90s stuff, you'll probably like this too. Lush and melodic, without being overtly commercial. I actually prefer it to her more popular early albums; in fact this is quite possibly my favorite. But then, I also really like her quirky, experimental 1996 release Boys For Pele, which a lot of people hated. To me, Boys For Pele and Scarlet's Walk are a yin/yang experience -- two contrasting sides of an immensely talented singer/songwriter.

She's still around, and still recording some very good music that gets ignored by pretty much everyone. Her latest -- Unrepentant Geraldines -- was just released a year or two ago.
