I was just listening to Monster/Imagine Dragons. And while it's a decent song, the distortion on it is nearly unlistenable. What the hell were they going for here?
As soon as the drums come in at the beginning (before they're pushing the volume to the max), there's distortion. And when the main part comes in, oh man... UV meter pegged, and it sounds like garbage. Really? I recall some of their other songs being this way as well, and I initially thought the mp3 I was playing was bad. Nope. I swear, I Really Like You/Carly Rae Jepsen, as cheesy as she is, is far nicer to listen to because at least it isn't distorted to hell. Even though I wish that song, like lots of stuff, had lower line levels. Same with other fairly new songs like Fancy/Iggy Azalea. At least they're not pegged to the max all the friggin' time. And then there are songs like Jump Around/House of Pain that have the volume a good deal lower, and almost never hit the max. I don't need to change the volume much, and the song just breathes more... it's hard to describe. Plus, the slight recording artifacts in it add some character (sounds like they were on vinyl originally or something, not sure what was typical for recording in 1992).
And, that song is just too catchy...
