Halftime at a local simulcast of the penultimate Dead show from Soldier Field. On the phone, so will be short. Fscking A this is great stuff. If this is their swan song, they're going out on top. Full review around 2AM.

Update: First set was great. Second set, not so good (I'm a Pigpen-era Deadhead and don't like the extended drums/space/weird Jerry crap). Still happy, though a look at the 7/3 setlist tells me I should have blown off the family event and gone then.

Observations from tonight's Dead show in Chicago:

Bobby Weir: Methuselah/Mark Twain/Chucky Heston as Moses. Seriously; that beard has its own ZIP code
Phil Lesh: My daughter called him a twin for her history teacher. Looks like a perfesser.
Mickey Hart: The only one of the group who doesn't look like a Medicare enrollee and has more drums than Neil Peart
Billy Kreutzman: Backbone of the band. Dude keeps the time and looks bored as hell doing it
Bruce Hornsby: Would be an official band member absent the death issue among Dead keyboardists
Trey Anastasio: I've seen him for 30 years here locally and knew he had an inner Jerry. Glad to see he could finally let it out, both on the strings and with the voice. No, he really nailed it.

EDIT: I miss Pigpen.
What we have today is way too much pluribus and not enough unum.

Greatly enjoying my just-downloaded Amazon MP3 Auto-Rip of The Aristocrats' new release "Tres Caballeros" (the physical CD should arrive within the next couple of days). Flawlessly played high-energy progressive/jazz/blues/whatever (there's even a country-tinged track) rock. Yeah, a bit of a stylistic roller coaster ride, but that's part of the fun!

This will definitely be in fairly heavy rotation for my (unfortunately lengthy) commute these next couple of weeks. Should be a nice complement to the Freak Zoid, Mattias Eklundh, Tohpati, Joni Mitchell, Tori Amos, Scott Henderson, Jimmy Herring, David Bowie, and Opeth I've been listening to lately.

Picked up Norah Jones' Little Broken Hearts on Vinyl. Finally an excuse to dust off the turntable.
Pretty sweet package with white LPs, a poster and download codes for the digital version.

More Opeth tonight (Deliverance). Pretty intense stuff.

On deck: Jimmy Herring - Lifeboat

Edit: I should probably mention the track that originally turned me on to Jimmy Herring: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BIMiCjZkfTI

It's not flashy; just achingly beautiful, and full of emotion.

I bought the Gary Husband album about a year ago (I'm a Gary Husband fan and the album had been on my WTB list for a while). When that track started to play I did an instant double-take. "Whoa... who's this guitarist?" I filed him in my "need to check out" pile. I'm just now starting to look into what else he's done; so my exploration of Herring's music has just started. So much music out there, so little time...

There's also a decent version of this on Heart's early "contractual obligation" album Magazine. Ann Wilson's vocals save what would've otherwise been a perfunctory and predictable cover version.

I'm listening to my download machine, an (yes I'm reading this directly off of it) HP Compaq 6710b that overheats horribly, screech it's way through some Windows 8.x updates. Sounds downright torturous.
Ah, good times. As far as actual music though, I have the Halt & Catch Fire theme in my head at the moment.

Perhaps you should look into using a VM for that instead... (Though TBH I've got nothing against re-purposing old hardware for various random purposes, my current firewall is an old Socket 754 Athlon 64, which pre-dates your 6710b by a half decade, give or take!)

Skylake is coming in less than a month. That's an opportunity/excuse to trickle down some newer hardware to the hinterlabs.

I was listening to the excellent soundtrack in Guild Wars 2 until I encountered a network connection error. :(

Oh, believe me, I've got plenty of AM2-era stuff I could trickle down to roles like that without any need for an upgrade to push things along. It's more a matter of inertia, and the fact that the old Athlon 64 is still perfectly capable (it's overkill, even!) of handling firewall duties for a puny DSL connection!

Beethoven's Piano Sonata #8 (Pathetique), performed by Andras Schiff.

Overall, I love Schiff's performances of the Beethoven Sonatas. I disagree, however, with his decision to repeat the entire opening section of the first movement. It's not how I heard this piece when I was growing up, and to me it feels like a jarring "reset" that destroys the momentum of the music. Apparently this is one of those things that musical historians and Beethoven scholars debate back and forth, as there's some ambiguity regarding Beethoven's original intent. Schiff is one of the (few) pianists who are in the "repeat the whole introduction" camp. Well, I know how *I* think it ought to be played... I also have a copy of Audacity, and I'm not afraid to use it.

After enjoying their latest one "Etymology", I decided to pick up their debut album as well. They're a duo -- guitarist Jon Durant, and Colin Edwin (of Porcupine Tree).

Beethoven's Hammerklavier Piano Sonata, as performed by András Schiff. Truly one of the most amazing pieces of music ever. Though these words don't really do it justice (you need to listen to it!), if I had to describe it in one sentence I would say it is a fusion of Beethoven's own idiosyncratic, dramatic style with Baroque musical traditions.

Here's a performance by Emil Gilels. I vastly prefer Schiff's interpretation though (OMG, Gilel's 3rd movement just puts me to sleep).

Edit: Oh, wait... here's Schiff's version.

Re: What are you listening to RIGHT NOW?

I finally got around to hooking up a pair of recently acquired Triad Gold PowerSub subwoofers to the stereo I use in my hobby room. I think I'm going to have to relisten to my entire music collection. I just can't believe how wonderful these subs sound. They're quick and tuneful sealed boxes and they blend perfectly with my Infinity Kappa 6 speakers. The Kappas can go fairly low on their own, especially with the bass knob at +2 on the amp. For years--no, decades--I believed that I was listening to the best of best & that my slightly bass-boosted Kappas didn't need the help of some audio-colouring subwoofer. Man, was I wrong!

So with the "new" Triads crossed in at 60Hz, bass knob on the Kenwood smack dab in the middle, and the system properly tweaked, I organized a quick playlist and just let it play nice and loud last Saturday:

Fleetwood Mac - Monday Morning
Allman Brothers - Come and Go Blues
George Benson - Soulful Strut
Irene Cara - Flashdance... What a Feeling
The Band - Up On Cripple Creek
Eagles - Take The Devil
Cher - The Way Of Love
Apollo 100 - Joy
Ted Nugent - Hey Baby
Bob Dylan - Tangled Up In Blue
Harry Nilsson - Jump Into The Fire
Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young - Teach Your Children
Aimee Mann - Save Me
The Specials - Do Nothing
Heart - Magic Man
T. Rex - Bang a Gong (Get It On)
The Mamas & Papas - I Saw Her Again Last Night
James Taylor - Fire and Rain
The Carpenters - I Won't Last A Day Without You
Paul Simon - Crazy Love Vol II
Leonard Cohen - Closing Time
Huey Lewis & The News - If This Is It
The Supremes - Baby Love
Adam Ant - Goody Two Shoes
The Beatles - The Ballad of John and Yoko
Samantha Sang - Emotion
Redbone - Come And Get Your Love
Neil Diamond - Song Sung Blue
Trooper - Raise A Little Hell
Marvin Gaye - Sexual Healing
Carly Simon - It Was So Easy
Amy Winehouse - Love Is A Losing Game
REO Speedwagon - In Your Letter
Mac & Katie Kissoon - I'm Just Dreaming
Blondie - Sunday Girl
John Lennon - Woman
America - Mad Dog
Annie Haslam - I Never Believed In Love
Sade - Flow
Paul Simon - Kodachrome
Electric Light Orchestra - Sweet Talkin' Woman
Joe Walsh - Turn To Stone
Earth, Wind & Fire - Love Music
Dusty Springfield - Breakfast in Bed
Katie Melua - Nine Million Bicycles
Triumph - Lay It On The Line
ZZ Top - Tush
Bread - Dismal Day
Rolling Stones - Dear Doctor
Tina Turner - What's Love Got To Do With it
David Bowie - Modern Love
Fat Larry's Band - Act Like You Know
Stevie Wonder - As If You Read My Mind
Bee Gees - More Than A Woman
Led Zeppelin - D'yer Mak'er
1910 Fruitgum Company - Simon Says
Harold Melvin & The Bluenotes - Wake Up Everybody
Velvet Underground - I Found A Reason
5th Dimension - Stoned Soul Picnic
The Beatles - Golden Slumbers / Carry That Weight / The End / Her Majesty

The increased 20-60Hz performance is just oh so groovy! In fact, it's kind of addictive. After work today I spent far too much time in there listening to song after favorite song, grinning from ear to ear. I even played a few of my old records and tapes just for fun. They too sounded great with the added bass, but digital (FLAC) music and FM radio seemed to benefit the most. One of the first things I noticed after switching over to my trusty Akai tuner was how full and weighty station jingles sounded with the increased LF response. I was feeling some of those sound effects from across the room!

So what am I listening to RIGHT NOW on this system?

Mary Black - Vanities from her excellent album No Frontiers. I could just stay in here forever.

I've been listening to Van Canto, an acapella power metal group, as well as the Transistor extended soundtrack.

Spock's Beard - Beware Of Darkness

'90s prog rock with its roots firmly planted in the '70s. The opening cut is a prog-ified cover of the George Harrison tune the album is named after. Fantastic album that wears its influences (Yes, Genesis, Gentle Giant) on its sleeve.

Sacrae symphoniae 1597, by Gabrieli. Renaissance compositions don't have the form and structure of more modern pieces. Each wanders and weaves its way through a pleasant musical journey in soothingly unpredictable fashion.
