2 old-school AM radios: one with the Yankee's game, the other with the Met's game. Neither game by itself is quite as good as both simultaneously.

1978. September. Bucky Dent. Vermont State Fair. Ticket Booth.

I was 14, full of way too much piss & vinegar, and the only reason the guy I was working with didn't beat me was the respect he had for my father. Given how I rode him (Fair week was also the week the Yankees took seven of seven from the Sox), I should have been beaten. We made up some 20 years later.

Well, it was on the way home when it popped up on SiriusXM. One of the guilty pleasures from just before graduating University, and something that always has me cranking the volume (oh, and also from the era where MTV videos often had backstory):

Eurythmics - Would I Lie To You?

Interesting visual. :P

Even more interesting though; that little 4-note guitar riff to open up the song. For whatever reason, even if you hadn't told me the song or the artist, I could guess the recording date plus or minus 2 years, using only those four notes and the guitar effect.

Looking forward to seeing them live at this years Aftershock. Didn't even know they were still playing.

Agreed, that riff is clearly mid-'80s. Hell, I was a 20-something then.

Nice! Happy, indeed.

@thread: things which reemerged from randomized playlists recently and merit comment:

The Chainsmokers' Don't Let Me Down ft. Daya. Its fun bass drop together with Daya's voice makes the track overall feel weirdly trapaeton to me, which I've seen precisely nobody comment on despite it being one of the most popular pieces of music of this year. The "lyrics" are hokey nonsense. The track's key is also strange, which I like. The drop really does call to my mind lots of trapaeton and trap house hooks (see e.g. Walshy Fire's contributions to Major Lazer). It's really earwormy esp. if you like cheesy bass loops. Find the original music video if you want an especially strong dose of "kids these days" (assuming you're late twentysomething or older).

This string arrangement of Habanera for the tempo. Also because love is a rebellious bird that no one can tame.

Ephixa's dubstep remix of Song of Storms because sometimes I get nostalgic for the N64 era and Ocarina of Time only to realize that I couldn't bear the mechanics anymore if I tried to replay it, so it tugs those emotional strings and is fun to boot. Really calm by his standards. Makes me think of Robin Williams' commercial for the 3DS port of Ocarina he did with his daughter Zelda. Sad.

Great song from a fantastic album from an under-appreciated band. Sure, Dennis had a bit of a theatrical/campy streak. Sure, they eventually went off the rails with the "Kilroy" album. But that doesn't change the fact that they were a damn fine band.

Saw them multiple times back in their heyday, and one more time just a few years ago when they played the Naperville Ribfest. Mmm... Ribfest. Gotta get my annual dose of milling sweaty mobs of people, over-priced smoked pork product, and over-the-hill classic rock bands...

Beth Hart - Immortal

I'd just like to thank credible again for recommending Beth Hart and Shelby Lynne. I've been gradually adding stuff from both of them to my music collection.

P!nk - just like fire. Simple, peppy, doesn't try to sound like an autotuned piece of crap. One of the better things I've heard on pop radio as of late.

Listening to a couple of albums on which keyboardist Bernie Worrell played. I found out this morning that he passed away on Friday, at the age of 72, from lung cancer.

Jeez, Shelby Lynne's cover of "Rainy Night In Georgia" is absolutely gorgeous. For some reason, it is only listed as "Track 12" though (on her "Suit Yourself" album).

I posted a few months back regarding Dream Theater's "The Astonishing" concept album. It just hit me... this is their Styx "Kilroy Was Here" moment. The crucial difference is, it kinda works, in spite of being even more ambitious and overblown than "Kilroy". And given that the lead guitarist, keyboardist, and vocalist all seem to have been on board with the concept, it's probably less likely to cause the band to disintegrate over "artistic differences" like Styx did.

It's a little bizarre being able to mentally anticipate every curve, and even the racing line, from race gaming.
