So is most of the Porcupine Tree stuff this good too? If so, I see a number of CD purchases in my near future!

OK, Porcupine Tree's "Fear Of A Blank Planet" has definitely gotten my attention too. But what to get next? Might just have to get them all...

They also seem to pay enough attention to sound quality that getting physical CDs instead of lossy MP3 downloads would definitely be a wise move for future purchases. Getting into bands with a deep back catalog is always hard on the ol' credit card balance!

After several listens, I have to say that "Anesthetize" (third track from "Fear Of A Blank Planet") is, quite simply, one of the most brilliant pieces of music ever conceived. Alex Lifeson (of Rush) even has a guest guitar solo, which seems appropriate given that -- at nearly 18 minutes long -- "Anesthetize" hearkens back to the days when Rush had a habit of doing extended LP-side-long (or nearly so) epics.

Thanks for introducing me to the Porcupine Tree... Seriously, Fear of a Blank Planet is genius. And I agree with you about Anesthetize.
it's 18 minutes long, but it's worth listening to constantly an entire day.

Mott The Hoople - All the Young Dudes:

Ian Hunter and the rest of Mott had been trying for 3-4 albums with insufficient success. David Bowie saw them live (it was their rendition of Lou Reed's/Velvet Underground's "Sweet Jane" that caught his ear) and took them under his arm to record this album. He offered a choice of Suffragette City (i.e. "wham bam thank you ma'am") or the actual title track. Album did well but band slowly disintegrated after that, some becoming part of Bowie's touring band, some becoming part of the nascent Bad Company, others scattering to the winds to be lost forever.

I'm picking and choosing on backfilling my CD collection with some of my favorite '70s LPs as the thought of digitizing them all, and taking the time to do it right, just knocks me off my perch every time I think about it. This was a nice aural memory to be on the front porch this afternoon.

Enter The Haggis - Gutter Anthems

They are one of my wife and oldest daughter's favorite bands. Saw them (well, the band formerly known as them... they're actually called Jubilee Riots now, long story) last Friday at Bell's Eccentric Cafe in Kalamazoo. It had been a few years since I'd seen them live, and it reminded me of how much fun they are. Back catalog has been summarily added to my MP3 player (in the car) and to the playlist (at the computer).

Kayo Dot - Coffins on Io

Holy crap this album is something else. The band's leader Toby Driver said, "Basically the vibe that we're going for here is inspired by 80s retro-future noir-- Blade Runner. I wanted to make a good record to put on while you drive across the desert at night under a toxic, post-apocalyptic atmosphere." and "The sound is kind of like a sexy combination of Type O Negative, Peter Gabriel, Sisters of Mercy."

Channing and Quinn. Not at all the sort of music I normally gravitate to, but this duo is strangely compelling. They opened for Enter The Haggis (mentioned in my previous post) over in Kalamazoo at Bell's Eccentric Cafe, and we picked up both of their CDs at the show. Just got around to listening to them in the past couple of days and I'm hooked.

I don't recall now which track was playing when I posted, I had both albums queued up back to back. Might've been "Origami" off of "Under This Big Striped Tent".

(As an aside, the mix is not very good on that CD; way, way too much mid-treble. Ran the whole thing through an EQ plugin before adding it to my music library...)

Wow, excellent. That's infectious.

I found Concretism not long ago and it sates my desire for moody ambient electronic music. I really like The Hospital; it evokes Scarfolk Council and similar creepy fiction set amid the warlike concrete prisms and flak tower-aping brutalist architecture of the 50s-70s:

https://soundcloud.com/concretism/the-hospital

In another of my veins courses purest blaxploitation funk, an aesthetic which Thunderball nailed with Scorpio Rising. My favorite track is probably the downtempo closer, Golden:

Any truth to the rumor that Banks never performed that intro live again after he flubbed it once at a concert? (Figured you'd know, being the TR Forums' resident Genesis-head.)

More likely due to different (better) mastering than the higher bitrate, but either way, better sound is better sound!

Is no rumor. I've got a couple of early Selling England shows where he plays it; after the show where he goofed it's gone and the song starts with the vocals. Tony Banks is wrapped just a little bit too tight on the perfectionist scale. Tragedy really, as that's one of the best bits of the song (along with Steve Hackett's guitar solo). For the record, Steve Hackett is pretty much the inventor of the tapping technique.
