I still have my last cassette deck (Denon DR-M44HX), but I fear that to get it in running order (all those pinch rollers must be hard as rock 30 years on) would be cost-prohibitive. The tape collection itself is long gone, lost to a SWMBO cleaning jihad at least 20 years ago.

My guess is that the rubber pinch rollers are shot. Mine's been out of the stack for about 20 years and I can't be bothered to dig it out to check.
Also, some of those old Denons used belts/o-rings as drive components and I can't believe they've held up. The 44HX was about a $600 deck when I bought it circa 1987 and I'd probably spend that at a minimum to get if fully working, which would leave me with the angst that goes through the small brain of the dog that finally catches the car, i.e. why?

You could probably sell the repaired deck to a cassette-loving hipster for a tidy profit.
