The habanero is just a note right at the tail end of a sip. Flavor, rather than heat.

I usually buy one lighter and one darker brew at a time so I have a choice. My lighter choice this weekend is Dogfish Head Namaste. Similar to Short's Nicie Spicie, though now that I've had it, I prefer Short's (which is sadly, seasonal).

I haven't had that particular one, but several breweries are making beers that have both chocolate and some sort of hot peppers in them now. It is a combination that works surprisingly well, provided the hot peppers aren't overdone.

Have you tried Dr. Pepper 10? It's better than zero, imo.

Zombie Monkie Apocalyptic Porter, from Tallgrass Brewing

I suppose it was inevitable that beer names would get more and more outlandish as the craft beer market gets more crowded and breweries try to stand out from the crowd, but I find this one to be particularly silly.

Very nice Porter though.

I haven't.. :o

Can't say I've seen it for sale anywhere, though... My personal favourite soft-drink for the taste : sugar ratio is definitely Pepsi Max. :D

Tried alcohol a few times, but I really don't like it. :/

I do like Dr Pepper, but haven't tried the 10. The ad campaign when it launched was downright moronic; the message was essentially: "Real men don't drink those girly zero calorie diet sodas, so here's a diet soda with some token sugar in it for you guys!" Dumb, dumb, dumb.

I envy people who can tolerate diet soda (both taste, and without the mild stomach irritation I seem to get from it). I'll drink it the second they can make a sugar substitute that tastes like sugar. I have yet to find one; the closest was Diet Dr. Pepper for the first thirty seconds it's ice cold (which probably numbs my taste buds enough to confuse them). After that, I've been able to taste the aftertaste in every diet beverage, be it saccharin, aspartame, sucralose, Ace-K, or Stevia.

I used to be the same way. Now regular soda tastes too syrupy sweet to me.

I'm trying to wean myself off of my decades-long habit of drinking diet soda by the gallon though. All that artificial sweetener can't be good for you. I drink a lot of (unsweetened) iced tea these days, though I do still occasionally "fall off the wagon" and go through the equivalent of a 2 liter of Diet Mt. Dew in a day at work.

Ommegang Hop House

Nice hoppy Belgian-style ale. They actually call it a "session-style ale" in the fine print on the label; but at 6% the ABV is a bit high for that. I suppose as Belgian ales go, it *is* pretty low in alcohol though!

Ommegang is really good. Sounds like Hop House might not be the beer for me, but I really enjoyed their Saison. I've heard good things about most of their other beers, but haven't found them to try them.

Oskar Blues Old Chub Scotch Ale. Significantly more enjoyable than reading an analysis of traditional operating system scalability in multi-core systems, and I like operating systems.

I suggest combining the two activities! (Assuming you haven't already done so.)

I am drinking the leftovers of today's homebrew bottling run (multiple batches). Currently in the glass is an experimental oak-aged strong ale with fermented maple syrup, which I've named "Unrest in the Forest"... yes, I'm a Rush fan ;-). Verdict: "way too much oak". Need to cut the oak roughly in half next time.

In this context, there's a more noble law that takes precedence: C6H12O6 → 2 C2H5OH + 2 CO2

But yes, I'd also prefer the oak and maple character in this beer to be a bit more "equal" as well.

The two were combined, but as it turns out, an 8% ABV beer, an empty stomach and 30-ish pages of research papers don't go well together. While I truly enjoy beer and reading papers, I failed to give my second paper the attention it deserved. Based on that, I stuck to Trader Joe's Ginger Brew (a non-alcoholic ginger beer) tonight while writing a basic file system.

Your strong ale sounds like a curious mix of flavors. It's a shame the oak overpowers it a bit, as the fermented maple syrup could lend a really interesting taste. Is it kind of a caramelized yet sour taste?

Victory DirtWolf Double IPA. It's the New Year, end of the first week back at work, feels like victory! Exceedingly easy drinker for 8.7% ABV, and the second one down is hitting already. Taste is IPA, layered hops, pretty tangy, but a slight burnt malty grain taste comes through. Long aftertaste with a medium body, though. Not too shabby.

Not *right now*, but I had an absinthe and rye cocktail w lunch several hours ago, and it's giving me a *massive* headache.

Never had this sort of reaction to either of the two spirits before, either :/.

Kivu Costa Rican "La Sonrisa" Dark Roast coffee. I'm usually a medium roast kind of guy but wanted to give this a shot. Pretty damn good actually, I've got to remember not to put so much in the filter next time because it came out strong and I had to cut it down with more cream than I normally care for.

Was back at my hometown this past weekend. There's a bar there that has 40 taps that they rotate various microbrews though. I found my new favorite coffee beer: St. Francis Brewing Company - Bean Me Up Scotchy. While most coffee stouts take on a sweet syrup-y flavor, this Scotch Ale actually captured the bitter characteristics of a cup of coffee. 10% ABV was an added bonus  Unfortunately it appears to be a limited edition.

I don't know if Kala Khatta is available outside India but If anyone happens to visit India - don't miss it - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snow_cone#Kala_Khatta - try the snow cone as well as kala khatta soda with salt and pepper, its an excellent drink IMO.

coffee beans of my own roasting

I have been a tad (quart?) low on coffee all day so this sounds particularly appealing. I would love to see the roasting directions/recipe, and source/link for raw beans.
In the mean time, I plan to start the soak with my favorite store-bought beans, and in 2 weeks will comment on how my neophyte interpretation of this recipe turned out.

Shall I assume this is served with some of the soaked beans on the side?

Right now I'm working my way through Brazil Bob O Link Pulped Natural, Colombian Narino El Tambo, and Natural Bourbon Lot BN20 from Bodhi Leaf Trading Company. ] The best things about roasting your own beans is you know exactly how fresh they are and you can experiment with SO many types of coffee and blending your own batches. Often just tweaking the roast of the exact same beans by just a few seconds can really alter the flavor. With just a single origin roast of the listed Brazil, I can get a real lite fruity flavor (nothing like some African beans...but much more palatable as a single origin espresso) by racing through and ending just before second crack or a deep chocolate flavor that is like delicious hot chocolate by taking my time and getting more than a couple pops into second crack. You should really read up on coffee roasting, it is a very cheap hobby if you are industrious and the product is SO worth it after a couple days rest.

I roast in a re-purposed bread machine with heat gun pointed at it with a cooling cycle of a 2 gallon bucket with aluminum screen at the top for the beans and a shop vac at the bottom. Takes about 20 minutes start to finish depending on your roast cycle.

The first time I tried this recipe was with a liter of tequila to make a "kahlua with tequila" type soak, worked out really good...but the whiskey works better with the Irish cream (of course...). I also put in a half of a vanilla bean, but I don't think it is worth it...completely overwhelmed by the other flavors. You could easily get the same effect with a drop of vanilla extract to see if you prefer it that way. If you use an Irish cream which isn't too sweet, you might have to add a bit of sugar depending on your tastes. I use which is PLENTY sweet for me without any additional sugar.
