Old Time Barbering

Tue Dec 30, 2008 9:18 pm

"Mr. Kay gave haircuts in his old-fashioned barber shop on Manhattan's Upper West Side for over fifty years. Watching Mr. Kay work is like stepping back in time. I directed this 'day in the life' documentary short back in 1994 while in film school at NYU. Hope you like it!"

Two lovers meet for the first time. They were made for each other. NSFW, but all of the right places are blurred out, and it's been on youtube for a while.

And this, though I'm sure some of you have already seen it, is just great. I laughed so hard when I first watched it and have waited and waited for it to show up online. So, for those of you who haven't seen it, enjoy...for those that have, I already know that you will enjoy it again...I did.

A classic Gong Show tribute to the power of cocaine. And yes, that's the real Oingo Boingo (well, in a while). Danny Elfman is playing trombone.

Le Mans 1969. It's a four-parter. The cars are classic, looking like race cars should. The casual attitude toward pit and track safety is astounding. The sounds are glorious. The crowds look like a combination of refugees from The Who's Mod era and Joe Average Frenchman.

To think of rocketing down the pre-chicane Mulsanne Straight (Le Ligne Droit des Hunnadieres) at 240 MPH/386 KPH in a 1969 car in the dark (quoted for the Porsche 917 and Ford GT40) and doing so for about 8 hours is just nuts. In part 4, the difference in engine sound between the GT40's low-rev V8 and the Porsche 908's high-rev flat-8 is interesting, and the last lap dicing was quite rare for Le Mans of that vintage.

This guy built a fully-functional 1/3 scale Ferrari 312PB from scratch. It took him 15 years. He turned every single part out of metal with his own hands. If you could find someone small enough, it's a driver.

His reason for building it? He wanted to hear the Ferrari 12-cylinder sound but couldn't afford a full-scale Ferrari. I too love the Ferrari scream, but I'm OK with YouTube vids of the real things. His creation belongs, someday, in Ferrari's museum.
