I assume it's a Green? Why did you buy an external in the first place? I have a serious dislike of externals. They just don't make a whole ton of sense to me.

Useful as a back up you can keep in a different area; I need to start doing that again actually. One in my snake building to back up the home PC.

Oh I get the idea behind them. Just wondering why he bought it if the intention was to pop it out of the case and put it in his machine. But hey, that probably wasn't the original idea.

Sometimes an external is actually cheaper than the equivalent internal.

Does it void the warranty? I've often wondered about that.

(Obviously it would void the warranty on the external enclosure; but I wonder if you could still RMA the bare drive if necessary.)

I don't know. It only comes with a 1yr, so as long as it lasts longer than that, it's a moot point.

True. But that is also a potential reason to avoid doing this, as bare drives tend to have 2 (or more) years of warranty.

after 2 years and no serious offers, I'm thinking of expanding my job search to parts of Houston :-? I can't say I love Amarillo but I'm not sure about moving. ANd I need to have a long talk with my wife. But houston has less violent crime per capita, more jobs and more votech opportunities, and my family's there. And the field herping is better than it is up here--less rattlesnakes but they have alligators down there, as well as a hell of a lot more amphibian and chelonian variety.

Can't believe this didn't get mentioned shortly after it started. Can't believe *I* didn't mention it at some point, I guess I've been slacking off.

For over a month now, there's been an XKCD comic where the picture changes once per hour (originally the updates came every 30 minutes). The page will update itself if you leave it open. Sort of the web comic version of As Slow As Possible.

It has inspired a number of spin-offs, including:

- A site that stitches them all together as they are published into an animation of sorts, complete with pause, forward and back buttons.

- A somewhat bizarre Wiki devoted to "The One True Comic".

- A rather lengthy topic on the XKCD forums which appears to have become their rough equivalent of dymt.
Nostalgia isn't what it used to be.

Yup, I thought I'd mentioned it as well. Explain XKCD has the animation plus individual frames plus a transcript:

I've got a site bookmarked (at home, of course >.<) that allows you to speed up, pause, and manually control the frames of said comic.

All I have to say is that it is insane. I know animators do this stuff, but this one comic is epic and, as JBI mentioned, continues with hourly updates over a month later. I have no idea what Randall is doing. I love it, but I can't imagine how much work went into this (or may still be going into it).

Have I ever mentioned how much I hate mowing the lawn? Unlike the Midwestm we've had a clear & dry spring in VT. Unfortunately, we also have enough ground water to allow the Green Menace to grow. It's so dry here right now that after I climbed off the mower I felt like an extra in one of Clint's spaghetti westerns with dust in places I didn't know I had.

SWMBO is hosting her family Mother's Day meal (which means anywhere between 15 and 40 attendees) and she ordered that the grass be mowed despite no rain in the last 2 weeks nor rain for the foreseeable future. If I'm lucky I'll have killed it and won't have to mow until it grows back.

And to think that when we first looked for houses I wanted a 10-acre lot (specific reasons here in VT having to do with permitting and septic that were in force around 1994). If my 2 acres were flat, I wouldn't complain so much.

FWIW I love mowing the lawn. I grew up in Kansas though and we had it pretty easy. Lush, full fescue from April until October. I really do love it though.

I was born in Kansas (courtesy of the USAF and Titan II missile silos). If my lawn was Kansas-flat I'd not be complaining. First thing I do with a new lawn mower is disable many safety switches so I can actually mow the lawn.

Isn't there typically some teenage boy looking for $15 or so to deal with that mess for you?

It's the side hill. I can do it hanging off the fender but if I pay a teenager to do it and they flip over, there isn't enough liability insurance in the world to get me out of that one.

Besides, with a teenage girl in the house the last thing I need to be doing is to be paying a teenage boy to be around here. Won't be long before I'm paying them to stay away.

Ordered a new focus screen for my camera the other day to help with manual focusing. Got it in, took a few shots indoors, found it pretty handy. Took it outdoors, find out it's good for things up to about 2 feet from the lens and useless after that. Lost most of my shots.

On the plus side, I found time to bake/cook today, so I made Eggs Benedict from scratch this morning, and just did burgers from scratch for dinner. Fresh, homemade baked items really are the best.
