Help me decide whitch car to buy.

Mon Dec 30, 2002 1:49 am

Ok so my parents are buying me a car under 5-6k. Im in the bay area(california) and in need of a car for transportation to school. So anyway which type of car should i get? I just want something that is fuel efficient and is reliable. I was thinking maybe a honda civic. But I know NOTHING about cars so your opinions would be greatly appreciated. Any suggestions?

well i would say if that's your goal "fuel effecient and reliable" then the honda is a good choice...now me on the other hand could hardly handle the ssssllllllllllloooooooooooowwwwwwwwwwww @$$ thing but it'd more than get the job done

and 5-6k i'd think should get ya a pretty nice civic

oh a word of the wise don't go and top it out the first time you get a chance

p.s. well i don't drive that fast of a car (91'eagle talon tsi awd) even does well in the ice and snow!

The asian imports are generally damn fine cars. However, at least in my neck of the woods, repairing them is usually a tad more expensive. But it evens out in the long run, less repairs, eventually leads to less costs than domestic vehicles.

A friend of mine has a civic, he seems to like it. It does get good gas mileage and is reliable, so it should fit your requirements. I drive a 74 cougar that gets about 3mpg, so any car you get will get way better gas mileage than mine.......fills up tank again.....

That will be cheap, but he needs a reliable car. Beaters are anything but.

I second the suggestion of getting a beater.

Both the accord and camry are good cars.

What I suggest is before you make any decision on buying the car, bring it in to your mechanic, or one you can trust, and have them do a vehicle inspection. That will give you a good idea on the overall condition of the car, and how well it was maintained. Yea, it'll cost some $$, but it's money well spent, especially if it saves you from buying a POS.

In all seriousness, DiMaestro is right. Better to be safe than sorry when buying used (or new for that matter). You can get some really nice deals though if you do your homework (hey, kind of like PC's huh?).

Honda is definatly the way to go. I have a 91 Honda Accord and it has over 100,000 miles on it! and still going strong. From what I understand if I keep my fluids up and keep changing the oil regularly then I should be able to get 150,000 miles. It is just to bad I cannot afford a new one  they are just too expensive.

Uh, I think you meant 100,000 and 150,000. :) A car would fall apart from rust before you could get that many miles on it.

Honda or Toyota is probably what you want.

All I've ever owned is American Junk but I plan to change that with my next vehicle purchase.

My first '93 Saturn was nice. The one I have now burns oil :x

Most likely, you should get one of the older honda or toyotas I suppose. Just get it checked out first :)

Heh turns out I have to wait till march

But maybe by then I can buy a newer car. Yea I think I might end up buying a Honda or Toyota. From what I have read on the internet they say they are good cars.
