I've searched the forums and there does not seem to be any topic devoted to HTML editors so I thought I'd start this thread. I've been using "HTML Assistant Pro 2 SE" (it came with a book) for some time now. Its mostly just a cut and paste it yourself HTML editor with a hot link to invoke a browser to test it. I'm tired of this and was wondering if you all could suggest your favorite website editors and what characteristics make them attractive to you? I would want the output to be broadly compatible (I use Mozilla) and not use MS compatibality breaking HTML extensions. Thanks for your input.

I personally use a mix between Windows Notepad and Mozilla's built in editor. It works pretty well for me. If you want to see a site I'm working on (its very under construction) with them, you can check out http://www.jvbinc.com.

In windows, I use notepad+.

In Unix, I use Nedit or ee.

GUI editors ultimately get in the way of doing serious work.

I've used Alaire/Macromedia Homesite for a few years and it seems like a perfect mix of simplicity and convenience. I use Dreamweaver/UltraDev now and then for specific chores but keep going back to Homesite for its efficiency.

I agree on using Homesite. It's one of the best html editors out there. It comes free with Top Style Lite, which makes it really easy to configure style sheets.

If you've got the money, I would also suggest using Visual Interdev. I know, it's made by Microsoft, but it's really powerful especially when you're building ASP pages.

I've used a lot of editors over the years (since about 94). I've been using Homesite for a couple of years now and still really like it. I recently looked at GoLive! and have looked at Dreamweaver but they do not offer the same hand coding environment as Homesite. One of the early editors I liked was HotDog which I think is still around in some form.

So the consensus so far seems evenly split between text and graphic editors or using both. I'd like to see more example websites. Do any of you use reference books for HTML types or do you use the on-line HTML manual? Do you clip code from existing sites (like I did after asking permission) and then modify it or do you write it from scratch? I'll check out the editors you've suggested so far.

[rant] But... Frontpage 98? I hear about many exploits against the Frontpage/Explorer combination. But a few of the DLL's are useful. For example on my NT system I installed K-meleon and found I did not have any menus. I had to install and then uninstall Explorer to get the menu support. On the other hand, installing Symantec's disk defragmenter utility somehow modified a DLL (I guess) on my system that disabled access to the paradox database used by my instrument. After a dozen E-mail exchanges with Symantec I had to overwrite the NT installation to get rid of the effect. I also returned the software for a refund. There was no way to make it work without also disabling the instrument software. Sure maybe its the instrument manufacturer's (Perkin Elmer) programmers fault but they typically don't do small fixes just new releases and their software costs thousands of dollars to upgrade.[/rant]

i use 1st Page 2000.

it's a very nicely done, free powertool. syntax highlighting, preview panes, lots of helpful buttons and the like that makes writing anything from simple tables to CSS a bit easier.
