Where d'ya live? This isn't one of those places where they let tires get down to a "No Tread on Me" Texas Bald because nobody ever expects snow, is it?
paulWTAMU wrote:actually in texas stud tires are outlawed It's like they think Amarillo and Houston have the same climate...pisses me off! So you can't get decent snow tires for when it ices up, and the city certainly doesn't do any sort of maintence outside of the interstate, so a little 3" snow can actually jack up roads for a couple of days if it stays cold. If only they'd actually plow/salt/sand at least the major business road it'd help!

Meh, they're not legal here and we get plenty of snow. Texas actually has a provision to allow studs that "don't injure the roadway". Stud tires are outlawed plenty of places - Texas certainly isn't unique in that regard.
SpotTheCat wrote:If they outlaw them in Minnesota, of course they outlaw them in texas. I don't actually know anywhere where they are legal, I think they are legal in Alaska and some parts of colorado... it depends if they plow/salt down to the road surface in the winter.

Plenty legal here in VT, even in the summer. Of course, since all the flatlanders moved up here our highway departments try to keep roads clean & dry instead of packed & sanded, so all those studs are going to do on a dry road is massively increase your stopping distances.
SpotTheCat wrote:Most of the state is fairly well plowed in my experience, other than western MN where there's a lack of trees and thus an abundance of blowing, drifting snow. We get enough snow that we're forced to be able to deal with it in short order, I guess.Captain Ned wrote:SpotTheCat wrote:If they outlaw them in Minnesota, of course they outlaw them in texas. I don't like studs anyways (unless it's on an ice resurfacer... then they're required ). Chains work way better in the snow IME. They remove the snow from themselves as you go along. I wouldn't ever use chains around here, as anywhere within 40 miles of Minneapolis is fairly well plowed.

Born and raised on the eastern slope of colorful Colorado.
Now I'm outside of Portland, Or. The freezing rain can suck, but there's nothing but dry surface under the dusting you see in the picture. It's been on the news 24/7 here, the big winter storm. In fact one guy announced, "We've been covering this storm for 6 hours straight, and there's only been one accident to report!" I imagine that's less accidents than on a non-storm-2008-OMG!!!! day.

That's got much more to do with your buy-a-wreck method than anything else. My last 3 cars have come fresh from the dealer's lot and not a one of them developed salt cancer during the ownership term.

It is especially a bitch when I'm coming back home from school or going up to school. By the time my drive is finished, my car has changed colors from black to white and my windshield and windows have that "ye olde christmas-time" frosted appearance.

However there are two more dumpers lined up after this one, so who knows how much we'll get! Definitely going to be a white Christmas this year!!!! Yea! And I have 2 weeks of vacation to enjoy it rather than commuting to work! I may have to shovel a path on the roof for Santa to land on so he doesn't get stuck .
