Just another blizzard day in Boston here. We didn't quite get as much snow this time, but it's cold and windy. CBS affiliate says 16.2" this time. It's honestly just annoying at this point.

Yeah, I guess once you get past a certain point the amount doesn't matter much since you've already got a stupid amount of snow on the ground!

Ha. Over here in Oregon (Corvallis), we're having some of the best weather we've had in a while. Sunny and ~65F. Feels California-like. Sooner or later it'll probably go back to clouds though.

The home weather station is reading all of 10 degrees F right now. I'm told we might break freezing by Saturday evening, due to the incoming rain. Joy.

Whereas last weekend I was using an outhouse at -16F with a 30 knot wind blowing in. Voluntarily (as in I'm not in the Guard). Yesterday was the first day in February where it was above 32F. While our snowbanks are not Bostonian, they're still a bitch to see around. Can't imagine driving a '70s-style long nose car in this mess.

Well, the DC metro area is shut down today. Snow accumulation was downgraded from 4"-8" to 3"-7"; still a sizable snowfall prediction, but outside it's still freezing rain...

Cheer up! The freezing rain switched to snow at about 7:30 this morning for me. It's coming down at a good clip right now.

When I got up at 5, I looked outside and considered going in to work so I wouldn't have to use my vacation time. Then I checked the radar. I'm glad I did.

Same here 5-8 inches for my area 2 miles west of Philadelphia International Airport. Switched from heavy rain at 530 am to snow and it is supposed to keep snowing heavy till 5pm. Now it is 32f and dropping throughout the day to a possible record low of 8f tonight.

Me and a co-worker braved it, though we are the only ones on our floor.

When I left home it was a little freezing rain, but not really sticking (35). When I got off the metro downtown it switched to snow while walking to the office. Don't have a window so I don't know how big the drifts are, but might cut-out a little bit early.

Single digits two nights in a row, this morning it had warmed up to 40F by 9am. NWS showing 40s and 50s for the forseeable future.

So, any Bostonians tired of snow who don't mind living with approximately 1.8 billion transplanted Californians...come to Denver!

Was gonna show the cat what snow was this morning. It figured it out really quick and somehow clung to the door frame, climbed up my arm, up my back, then kicked to get back in the house and I landed on my face in the snow. Only thing good was the cat didn't take a picture

Bump!

Weather in the Chicago area has been very un-winter-like lately. It feels more like March... or October. Humid and rainy, with temperatures in the 50s.

Yesterday there were even dandelions in the back yard:

No snow here or hardly any which is unusual. There was one week back in the middle Nov. the temp got down to -15 where I'm located in Eagle River. The repeating pattern is warms up, snows, stays warm, rain with wind, no snow on the ground, and then it gets down between 0-15 degrees. We missed out on rain the last dusting of snow a few days ago.

I came home to the bay area (left Corvallis for a few weeks). Corvallis mostly had cloudy/dreary days, with varying degrees of rain. The bay area seems to have on/off rain as well (for once - I saw sideways rain in San Carlos today), but at least there's sun in between some of the rain.

Still not really sure where I want to move after college... I like the bay area more and have family down there (I feel like I'm cramped in Corvallis up there, or driving a long ways to hit the next town over - not sub/urban enough), but it's not exactly the cheapest of areas. Eh, that might be worth it anyway. Plenty of mechanical engineering jobs to be had down there.

Re: Winter weather

Mon Dec 14, 2015 2:12 am

Awakened Sunday morning to cloudy skies but warming temperatures, around 38F. However, the storm on Saturday had continued past dusk, which left a solid 0.5+ inch of pure ice on the street that leads down from our hill. The county had sanded it but not enough. After exiting the complex driveway and sliding the '98 Camry sideways (with winter tires) some 50 feet and narrowly avoiding a Honda Accord parked along the curb, we took a long look at the remaining quarter mile of steep ice and elected to be a bit late for church.

Not 15 minutes later, that same Honda was hit by another vehicle, and we watched our our front door as it was pulled onto a flatbed wrecker while two State Patrol officers wrote out the witness statements. Less than an hour later, the sun had emerged and the street was merely wet, with slush along the gutters.

I like winter weather in its own special way, but I'm glad we don't get ice like that as a regular event.

The trees here are confused, some are still halfway through the process of dropping leaves. Some won't even finish till the middle of January. :o Last week we had three days with temps between 80-84 degrees, on average it's been in the 70's and supposed to be a high of 74 today.

I've always wondered (and never really took the time to look into) how the trees determine when exactly they're going to drop their leaves. I remember hearing/reading that some of it is based off of the shortening daylight hours, but it's probably a combination of factors.

I would have to guess temperature plays a role in determining when the trees/scrubs start reacting. Confused the short woody scrubs into thing it was spring time back in middle of October, pussy willows (the fuzzy things for pollination) were out instead of during the end of April/May. Usually have snow on the ground in October, and cold temps.

Checking in from the Frozen North(tm) known as Canada... and very not frozen here... wearing light spring jackets.

Though I hear about an hour north of here has been getting some hints of winter.

Funny enough I just saw a docu that mentioned that. Oaks can sense the red wavelength of sunlight, and will primarily key off the decreased sunlight / increased night time hours. Not really sure how much of a factor temperature still plays in the equation, but in any case it's still odd to have trees dropping leaves in Dec/Jan. :P

This time last year i got stuck in my truck with a trainer that was mentally ill outside buffalo. He originally wanted to park directly beside erie with no supplies or amenities Luckily police shoo'd us away to a truck stop. Once at the truck stop he refused to leave the truck, and would send me in for his food or drink, and would get out and take a **** on the ground underneath the trailer.

Messed up thing is i know of a guy who's going through a similar thing in colorado where it's currently chains only and is probably about to shut down tuesday or so just west of denver. Mentally ill people are everywhere.

So far i've had a very care bear winter. I don't even think i've seen any snow yet. Spent too much time in texas where i was sweating.
