IBM "Clicky" Keyboards

Wed Mar 12, 2003 9:15 pm

UPS just delivered my new/old keyboard, a genuine IBM Model M PS/2 built in August 1989. With the first keystroke, I was back in typing Nirvana.

As long as you can press more than 2 buttons with out the computer making the most annoying beeping sound, and its not a split keyboard anything works :D :D :D Wow thats one old keyboard from 1989. I think I have an old one from my ancient 8086, 1990 ish

That's the best part. No longer do I have to chase my keyboard around the desk. I'm no LAN gamer, so I could care less about what things weigh. Once they're in place, they're not moving for a while.

I've got my PS/2 Model 25 clicky sitting by waiting for me to finish my Model 25 mod :). It's a little small so it should LAN pretty well.

I've got one (found it while dumpster diving). It's nice, but there's no number pad or windows keys. That and it isn't usb, and i've got a usb kvm. I set it up like a Dvorak keyboard and want to eventually learn how to use it.

Hey Howard are you going to post of pics of that mod when you are done. I have an old model 25 at home ( at least I think its a model 25)

Made a quick check does it look something like this http://www.can.ibm.com/helpware/8525.html?

Its got a Model M keyboard with it but for some reason my K7 system would never boot with that keyboard hooked to it I guess I'll have to try it on my new system.

Heh, I used to have one of those (along with the PS/2 it came with). However, my habit of staying up way into the night drove my roommate batty -- he could hear my 80wpm fingers clickety-clicking through the wall.

Now I prefer a keyboard with the distinct key moving of those old clickers, but without the loud noise. Mushy keyboards make me nuts -- as a speed typist it is critical to know that the finger I just moved actually made a letter appear.

Ahh not to mention the lack of the Winbloze key. Man I hate it when I accidentally touch it and the **** menu comes up!!! damn computer at work...

I have THAT keyboard too at home, Captain Ned. I wouldn't be home without it!

I, too, have kept my first IBM keyboard (remember the old model 30/286 with the 20MB HD?). The spouse is constantly amazed by my adoration for that old keyboard. I found another one at a junk auction later on and it now is waiting its' turn. The best keyboard ever made IMO.

ehe!! mine dates from 1990 (my first IBM-PC compatible). Every new year's eve I add a new mark with my screwdriver. Started in 1994.

Right now, it reads 90,91,92,93,94,95,96,97,98,99,00,01,02,03 :D

For those who really want one, I got mine off EBay from an outfit called Midwest Computer Brokers. I paid $14.99 + $10 shipping. I probably could have paid less, but I was too impatient and just clicked on the Buy It Now button. All I did was search on "IBM Model M".

muyuubyou:

The lack of the Windows key is a godsend. They're bad enough on full-size desktop keyboards, but on laptops (I work on the road and live/sleep/eat with my laptop) they're a **** menace. With a Windows key and a menu key right next to a way too tiny space bar, speed typing is impossible.

As for the noise, call it a reminder of better, simpler days when an 80286 running at 12MHz with 1MB of memory (Oh, the days of EMM386 and QEMM) was the absolute fastest desktop computer known to man.

Very very clicky. Also very very expensive.

These are the folks that took over making the "Omnikey" keyboards when Northgate went out of business.

You betcha, it has a steel bottom, I'm still using one from 1987 as I speak. I use it daily and it's connected to my main desktop computer. They rule!
They do make a lot of noise though (when you type obviously).

Hey-

I finally traded my cheapo keyboards for a the new Mac extended. I have a PC, but it's USB so who cares. It is silent and comfy and the black on crystal/silver has cool looks.

Gate Way Anykey

Fri Mar 14, 2003 8:53 pm

I love my gateway2000 anykey.
I turned it over and could not find a date, but it has been with me for quite awhile. at least 8 or 9 years.

It has a steel plate in it, nice weight to it,
plus any key can be defined with a macro or reprogrammed.

Funny thing is that I have never owned a gateway. picked a couple of them up from customers that kept accidentally remapping keys and didn't know what to do.

I don't like the keyboards that don't make a sound when you type. They just don't feel right. I have a really good logitech (cordless) and packard bell keyboards sitting on my desk. I also have a keyboard that can be used to type Arabic. Hehehe :)

ps i absolutly hate those new imac keyboards. Ahh they make me look so unaccurate :x

Another Model M user here, mine was built in '93. I've actually gotten used to the Windows key at work and almost miss it when I'm home. (Notice I said "almost" ;))

I have a Logitech cordless that I got for Christmas in 2001 that I like. Makes just the right amount of noise.

i don't like the new mac keyboards--the keys don't give enough "feedback"--you can't hear or feel them go down. No good.

Been using IBM Model M/AT101's for about 14 or 15 years now.

When my old Chicony died I bought a few Fujitsus and IBM's and most of the Fujitsus are in the garbage now.

I've bought probably 50 or more IBM's for work (from eBay and refurbishers) and about half have been beat to hell by my staff.

The survivors are still in use throughout the office and many spares are stacked in the supply room. But, I've got a big box filled with keycaps and cords too.

Just about everyone in the office has switched to the slick black Logitech Cordless k/b-mouse combos. They're also very nice. If you're going to get one, make sure you get the newer Elite model (uses 2 batteries instead of 4 and doesn't disconnect every few weeks requiring you press the "connect" button).

My IBM at work is from 89 (clicky) and the one I'm typing on at home now is from 93 (soft touch Model M).

Have to admit, I just find them too damn noisy and heavy going; I'm not a touch-typist, and have no problem with relatively quiet lightweight keyboards.

Logitech's current access keyboard is a damn nice one.
