upgrade suggestions, anyone?

Sun Apr 13, 2003 6:48 pm

Well, I've got roughly $600 to spend on some new hardware, and I want some suggestions or changes and the like.

I've got a few things that I'm thinking about, but others are accepted.

Thing 1:
Shuttle SN41G2 system.
It'll total about $500

Thing 2:
Athlon XP 2100+, Radeon 9800 Pro(when it's available), Misc. fans and new HSF.
Total about $550

Thing 3:
Athlon XP 2100+ and new speakers(Logitech Z560's most likely) and Radeon 9500 Pro
Total about $400-450

Thing 4:
Radeon 9800 Pro and new speakers(same as above).
Total about $550

I don't do much in the LAN area, but I do a little. I'm running an A7N8X, so I don't need a mobo upgrade. Don't wanna bother with more memory yet, unless I get the SFF.

I'll be upgrading from a Palomino 1600+ and a Radeon 8500 64Mb version.

Maybe a Barton? I dunno, I'm too indecisive.

I've heard of Thing1 and Thing2 before.

Of your choices, I expect that Thing3 would provide you with the most additional gaming enjoyment for your money.

My current specs are:

Athlon XP 1600+(palo)
Asus A7N8X DLX
512 Crucial PC2700
40gig WD HDD
Radeon 8500

The things I'm mostly interested in upgradeing, obviously, are my processor and graphics card. Maybe some new speakers or a new HDD.

I agree that Thing3 is the best deal, but the 9800 would be so nice to have. I'd love to see Doom3 on that mofo.

8) Well a Polly is a BIG waste in a nice mobo like that so any TbredB CPU would be the first thing I'd go for, even XP1700+ often get at least to XP2700+ speeds. PC2700 and 512MB certainly aren't limiting, ideally you want 2 sticks though for nF2. Rad8500 is still a good card (better than Rad9000PRO, Rad9100 & it seems Rad9200) and is in fact similar in pure speed as the Rad9500nonPRO albeit without the better AA+AF, DX9 etc. However a Rad9500PRO or better (only the 9600PRO isn't better) will give you a VERY nice boost in gaming. For HSF Volcano 9 & 11 are great cost effective and coolingly effective. Barton certainly isn't worth it.

TbredB XP1700+ or XP2100+
Volcano 9 or 11
Rad9500PRO or Rad9700 (both great stock & excel in o/c'ing)

;) Then see what you have left for speakers perhaps?
