what has overclocking done for you?

I can run WC3 at 1600 x 1200 max graphics.... 7fps higher than at stock speeds.

Are we talking just overclocking in the strict sense (increasing clock speed), or any sort of mod that allows a processor (or other component) to be run out-of-spec? E.g., I did the Athlon XP -> MP mod on a couple of XP 2100+ chips recently, to allow them to be used in a dually.

Never really got into hard-core overclocking, but I'll take what I can get without extreme measures. My first Socket A CPU was a Duron 650 that would do 950 with only a small bump in core voltage... made everything a lot snappier!

From my old pentium 100, 166 ,celery 300a, pentium 2 350, celery 433, 850 duron, and to my brand spanky new 2100+ xp cpus, overclocking has brought me days of fun and learning. Not to mention horified looks as smoke poored out of my celery 433 box (some weirdo left a power wire hanging out of the case when he screwed it back on) Normally about 10-20 percent performance boost throught the decade. The celery 300a by far the champion for ratio, had mine up to 500 for a short time :D I never tinkered with my 8086 @8 mghz, nor my 386 or 486 :-?

Overclocking has given me money I would have otherwise spent on new computer gear.

Now there's a first...

If I hadn't put this CPU up a notch and put the RAM @ CAS2, I'd be looking at a new pc now...

Oh, and about 5fps in Quake 2 ROFLMAO,

Tons. I'd have half the PCs and gear I do today, if I didn't OC.

I also wouldn't have the knowledge I do, WRT the guts of the box.

Doing the right overclocks have gained me 80FPS (in Quake 3, that is) on this system here, and about half as much in RTCW and JK2. Quite a noticeable difference, if you ask me.

Yes, these are real benches - I only overclocked the CPU 90MHz, but pushed the RAM to 180/360 DDR... amazing what the AthlonXP does with more RAM bandwidth at its disposal.
