Now a full-time student going for second undergrad degree (Electrical Engineering this time) with an eye toward getting a job after school that actually pays good money. It ain't everything, but I need some green to assist my wife in the living of our life.

i dont mind at all. If you look at history the market tends to stablize around 6 months before the rest of the economy does. Though i know that this isn't set and stone and sometimes history doesn't repeat itself...a lot the analysists here all come to the same conclusion(things will start getting better starting next year).

That being said...expect sizable job losses for the next few months and will then start to tapering off Q3. Unemployment will definately hit ~10.5%. Home prices will continue to drop for a while due to unemployment and the economy even though home purchases will start to show some signs of life.

If you do loose your job (which i hope no one does) and you can't get a new gig...coasting on unemployment should get you to a time where finding a job is easier (when most companies start seeing light at the end of the tunnel). With all the staff they let go in the past 1.5 years there are going to be positions that open up.

The worst thing is ...after all this is done and you manage to keep your job, find a new job, or just get a new job at a later date...once we get a couple of quarters of positive GDP...expect to get hit by a wrecking ball of taxes.

I am a .Net developer & infrastructure guy. I've spent the last 6 months developing sharepoint workflows and migrating our VMs to a Lefthand SAN. I like variety.

Code/maintain software, server, and clients for a medium sized payday loan company. Since I can handle 95% of the problems remotely it has allowed me to attend school a second time around and lead a unique life. I'm probably a prime example of a person who hates the job but loves the opportunities it allows me, it's the best situation I could be in right now.

I heard that there is increased rumblings from the government about these types of loans...are you worried about it at all or will it be pushed aside like 90% of the rest of their blustering.

Economy is in the tank here in Oregon, so school is the safest place to be right now. From old post.

Got the MS in Math in June 08, nearly finished with the Ph.D. (started it in 07). Economy is still in the tank in OR.

Where I live, Missouri, there was some of those rumblings about it but it has really died down. Am I worried? Not worried to be honest, I don't want to be in the field all of my life. In fact I want to move completely out of the information technology field and into the information science and interaction design fields. Technology is very much a love hate relationship for me and life is a journey, so it's been fun so far and I hope it will continue to be.

Given that an implosion of this breadth and depth is a roughly once-a-century event, I would not put a whole lot of faith in the predictive power of historical trends this time; the set of historical data points is just too small. And for what it's worth, Wall Street analysts are the same people who got us into this mess in the first place...

Your first sentence was very well written and has plenty of merit, but the problems facing us aren't nearly as bad as the Great Depression.

About the Wall Street thing, there were just as many analysts waving the "Holy Crap, Badness is Coming" flags during the whole build up. And if you wanted to point fingers at who got us into this mess in the first place, I would point it squarely(maybe more directly...squarely is a pretty solid conviction) at the government who dropped all the restrictions concerning lending standards.

Think of it like this...you don't blame the fire for buring down a forest...you blame the guy who left his campsite unattended which started it all.

And further R&P comments are not welcome. In fact, a thread in R&P titled "Who caused the meltdown" would be in order.

Thanks for listening.

I'm a IT contractor for the US Military. More specifically I do on-site IT support and my job is rarely every boring. I could move up to level 3 but I'd probably end up chained to a desk in a cubicle again.

I did that for 9 years at a "regular" IT company. I'd rather not do that again even if I do have to follow what seems like 100,000 more rules on a daily basis.

I work part time at a small company which manufactures load cells and pressure transducers, Delta Metrics, as Network Admin/IT Guy/Software Dev/Whatever Else Pseudo-Technical My Boss Wants Me To Do Today. It's interesting and nerve-wracking, as it's my first job and it was quite the jump in terms of responsibility. I also 'work' full time as a student (currently sophomore standing) at THE Ohio State University, majoring in Electrical & Computer Engineering with a specialization in Computers. I only just started taking my major courses, after having to bust through over a year of prereqs (calculus, physics, chemistry until my face bled).
