Steam ... 0 RMP .... Max torque. A Stanly Steamer could drive one wheel up a telephone pole, although I can't find a pic.

Steam and electric can both make max torque starting at 0RPM.

None of these hp/L measurements really matter all that much. Personally I have no particular care if a Car is American, Japanese, German or whatever. I have somewhat found myself preferring AWD or RWD, 60HP/L or more, 20lbs/hp or less and honestly I prefer that the car have a nice interior. To that end, I drive a BMW Z4.

I seperately have a project car - 1958 VW Beetle - has about 220HP and weighs not enough. :)

I understand its not exactly "modern day tech", but it doesn't impress me when you put it next to something like naturally aspirated Honda K and F series engines. Though, most Honda B's are from the day in age where this 4L was produced, also made more power per liter. (With the B17, and some B18's under the 100hp/liter figure)

(Ramblings from a superior foreign automotive technology fan.) I'll show myself out now.

You have to remember that the Falcons donor car is a taxi.

Oh and that engine in FPV form produces 310kw and 565nm. Futhermore 100% of that torque is delivered from 1950rpm all the way to 5500. (You really don't want to race one at the lights)
Not bad for a 1960's design. :-?

In that article there you see the first one that rolled off the production line in 1960, next to the FG Falcon, the latest.

I still think the best looking is the 1978 Falcon coupe "Cobra":

Sure, big torque numbers are great when you're trying to cut the best 60 foot times possible. That is... *IF* the car's weight + tire section width (i.e. - "traction"), and driveline can translate that power into forward motion. Again, this advantage favors the typical "I-only-race-in-straight-lines" crowd.

Different theory is applied to road course/autocross, or even your local canyon roads. When cornering G's put a vehicles tires at their lateral grip limit (more importantly, the outside tires), I believe a different power curve is beneficial. Specifically, the relation between the torque and horsepower curves. In the mentioned scenario, an abundance of torque when the throttle plate(s) are anything above partially opened (i.e. - maintaining or increasing speed/power delivery through the supposed corner) has the capability of completely overloading the outside tires' grip, inherently either slowing the vehicle by means of a loss of traction, or breaking the entire vehicle free (again, by means of a loss of traction.)
If the torque curve can be kept below the horsepower curve (or HP curve above TQ curve, whichever you prefer), the theory is that mechanical traction can be maintained while the throttle plate(s) are either holding engine power at a steady state (maintain speed/power delivery) or increasing engine power (powering out of supposed corner). A few entities have coined the term "auto-magic traction control". DSPORT tends to be a big proponent of this phenominon.

Knowing this, I tend to believe this is why Honda engines have the characteristics of low-friction, high RPM (eg. low-torque/high-horsepower), along with transmissions geared to keep the HP curve above TQ curve upon gear changes. (Can't speak on the more civilized "Eco focused" powertrains Honda produces.)

For example, a Honda K20Z3 (albiet, supercharged):

A Chevy Nova 406ci Dart:

Taken from here: http://www.superchevy.com/technical/eng ... ewall.html

If you believe the theory, the Dart *may* very well be fun, but it would sure as hell be a handful, and likely produce slower lap times, all else being equal.

And the "ambo" (lambo?)... I dunno. Don't own one. Numbers alone indicate "sh*tty". I do however own the K20 powered car above, an S13 (Nissan 240sx), and an Acura NSX - Fuel economy is great in all of em :) And they T.U.R.N.!

I always wondered how it would have run with 10-1 compression ratio. It had 7 main bearings so the bottom end could have taken the extra HP. But I do not know how much the block would ave flexed.

Hmm, I-6s I have owned or driven:

1978 Jeep CJ-5 with the AMC 258ci 12V
Dad's 1980 Datsun 280ZX with the L28 2.8L 12V
1973 Triumph TR-6 with the 2.5L 12V (and the Prince of Darkness)

My brother had a 1988 Supra with the 7M-GE in-line 6. It went through head gaskets routinely.

The 292 I 6 were bullet proof. They would haul those small school buses around for ever. The 327s, even 4 bolt ones, did not do nearly as well in that situation.

Absolutely agree.

Someone was saying the "numbers" are a bit weak for an i6.
I was just pointing out what it can do with a little engineering. And yes it does stretch the limits of traction as you rightly point out.

However where I live I need to overtake these. 3 in a row can call for some pretty high speeds and a definite want for moar acceleration.

These days a full multi million dollar V8 supercar does that in ~2:10 for comparison.
The Cobra was a road registered street car that didn't even have a roll cage IIRC.

Awesome crazy stuff... I wish I could click my fingers and bring back the 70's.

See that and raise you with this:

I don't remember when or how I became aware of the Mt. Panorama circuit. All I do know is that once I became so aware it has risen to the top of my personal track list (though old Spa and the Nordschleife aren't far behind). Probably has something to do with the need to wake up at 4 AM on Sundays back in the mid '80s to see Mansell, Senna, & Prost jockey for F1 dominance.

EDIT: I know it's a public road and I can drive it anytime I like. That said, your Aussie version of speed control is WAY overboard.

Yep we just lost our entire automotive industry, and the Falcon and Commodore with it.

RIP Ford Inline 6, 1960 to 2016 lol.

Also sold my GMC Sierra, made $5K on it, the bottom end in the Falcon has low comp across all 6 cylinders so its pretty close to toasted, it needs a new bottom end so keep an eye on this thread as there will be updates in the future.

Also finished my apprenticeship and now I'm unemployed, going back to school to get off the tools.

My Falcon is now 5sp manual but I have some issues with it, vacuum leak under the dash, and the bottom end of my engine is toast, so I got another from a wrecker.

I need to change clutch cable and shifter on the box as well.
