do i need a beard trimmer, shaver, or both?

I have a some goatee action going on and I want to make sure it's well groomed. If I get a 'beard trimmer' will that allow me to easily shave down the hairs I want gone in addition to keeping my goatee nice and tidy, or do I need a separate shaver for that? Looking for some ideas here, as I've pretty much used regular razors as long as I can remember.

I use a beard trimmer on my goatee, and I use a DE safety razor on the rest of my face.

You can use a beard trimmer to shave the rest of your face, but it doesn't get very close. It gives you the anti-hero stubble.

I use a beard trimmer and a razor. Then again, I don't sculpt much facial hair other than a full beard from time to time. Go big or go home.

The first one I had lasted about 2 years before the motor just wore down (I think?). It does a pretty damn good job for $15.00 (what I spend at the grocery store) so $5 at amazon is more than reasonable. I bought another one to replace the busted one. It's water proof too.

There is one thing that I think is weird about it though. After the first couple of uses, you'll notice the blades don't move as fast, but the battery is close to full. Just run it under some water with the motor on and it should speed back up.

I use this and one of those Gillette Fusion razors on everything on my face that isn't beard (which is mostly my neck). Works well. I've had this one for about 3 years so far, and it hasn't shown any signs of slowing down.
