Going back on topic, it's not like they're the only chip designer without their own fabs. nVidia is the most obvious one that jumps to mind, but they're not alone.

This will probably allow GF to expand which it would have a hard time doing under AMD. It would be harder to convince companies to go with AMD fabs because they would just be subsidizing a competing CPU/Chip designer. Now that GF is on it's own it should be easier to get other business or at least I expect that's the thought behind it. Chances are AMD has an agreement to fab chips there for now so GF can get more customers otherwise they could make GF go under if they pulled their product and moved it somewhere else.

Wasn't spinning them off completely part of the original plan when GlobalFoundries was created?
Nostalgia isn't what it used to be.
