Question about a router I installed.

Tue Jun 17, 2003 9:55 pm

I bought a netgear 4-port router yesterday so I could network my computers together, now when you connect another computer to the router another light will light up, if the light is green that = 100mbps and if the yellow that means 10mbps. For some reason when I hook my other computer up the #2 light shows up yellow(10mbps) while my main computer shows up green(100mbps). Is this normal or should my other computer be running @ 100mbps also? If it matters both computers are running XP Pro.

Check the settings for the card that its set on auto or 100MBit, full.

And we do have a networking forum.

Hi there. Did you make the cable yourself? If so, this problem commonly occures when the cable is of a low quality. Make sure you use the following cabling configoration and all ends to ensure 100Mbits/s:

Other things to try are network card drivers and to also make sure the NIC card is definately a 100Mbits/sec card. It might help to update the NIC drivers, although, this is not very likely to help. I take it you've also tried the cable in different ports on the router? If not, give this a go and see what happens. First port of call however is to try that cable, as they equate to most of these problems that your experienceing. Use the colour configoration I've shown you above (top to bottom = left to right), and thorectially, it should work. Good Luck.

I believe its my NIC, when I tried to configure it I only had options to change 10BaseT and nothing with 100 on it. So I think my NIC will only run 10mbps. Is there a big difference between 10mbps and 100mbps? Cause if there is then I will get a new NIC if not then ill leave it as it.

Sorry for not putting it in the networking forum, I wasn't thinking....

if you're only using the internet, then no not a big difference, but if you're transfering files over the network, then yes a huge difference. a 10/100 NIC will only set you back $10 or so

Hi. Well 10Mbits/s gives you a 1.25mb/s transfer speed and 100Mbits/s gives you 12.50mb/s transfer speed. So yeah, as redmouse said, internet will be fine, but if you interesting in playing games over your LAN or file swapping, you'll see a great benefit in the faster speed.
