Be very careful, there be R&P here.
In those days spirits were brave, the stakes were high, men were real men, women were real women and small furry creatures from Alpha Centauri were real small furry creatures from Alpha Centauri.

I do not understand why ebooks are not cheaper than (new) paper books of any variety. Surely economies of scale work in both situations and it can't possibly cost more to deliver an eBook to a reader than it does to manufacture one and get it shipped to a distributor and then on to a reseller like Amazon or whatever.
I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do, I do not do. But what I hate, I do.

Well, now you do understand :) - pricefixing.

Well, in this case it's apparently - at least in part - due to pricefixing :)

But even without pricefixing, retail prices are determined primarily by what the market will bear.
