Man this thread is just full of fail.

My wife likes HD, but it has more to do with the shape of the image than the clarity, though she doesn't mind stretching 4:3 content. That also makes me bonkers.

What is wrong with HD TV's they ask, why ignorant @#$%s who simply don't care to format the content properly or mess up the display frequency. I hate sitting in front of a 1,200 dollar TV that is not setup properly. You step forward and pickup the remote and in 15 seconds fix all the settings only to get yeld at by the owner for messing up the TV. Kill me now please!

what you quoted and what you're ranting on about have nothing to do with each other. In my wife's case she prefers HD content and will watch in HD if available, but if it's not she likes to stretch the image. :p

Early HD sets, LCD's in particular, tended to have lots of pixel and lag, so the puck almost disappeared. Combined with the fact that it often is obscured by a player or the near edge of the rink, and the game did not work on older tv's. I will say this, though: Sluggo's wife is right -- Go Wings!

That's why they had that experiment with the blue and red streaks. Great comedy material for Canadian outlets on how non-Canadians can't follow the puck/action.

What happened to that experiment?

I think it died from embarassment, even in the US it was mocked

 Go Devils!

Edit: oops, Captain Ned beat me to it.

And on a plasma that's the safest thing to do anyways.

Playoff hockey in HD on a 55" Panny top-line plasma has been a revelation.

I think this depends highly on the type of female company you keep. Most women have priorities in different areas. It's more about watching the show so they can talk about it and know what's going on, then actually enjoying it to it's fullest extent. In other words they really don't care about what they're watching, they just need to watch it. XD

That would be the anxiety and tone of voice they use. It generates angst. It's really hard to sleep with people arguing emotionally, unless you are capable of tuning it out. Like how babies produce the most shrill noise to wake you up. It's not even that it's that loud, it's all about tone and how the brain interprets such messages. (If you were looking for a more technical explanation >>)

QFT. That's all about asserting that you know what's best for your $1,200 piece of electronic hardware rather then actually being right. Sometimes I really hate people.

Hahaha, in that case don't complain anymore that you can't follow the puck now (not you, but whoever were complaining previously)! :P

As detailed on these pages, I hemmed & hawed for about a year on the plasma/LCD issue. The Panny is the best Christmas present I ever bought myself.

I end up watching a lot of SD content for a few reasons: #1. My HD tuner is slower so when I am flipping channels the 5ish second latency gets annoying, #2. I have some channels in SD only (and if Im flipping between two programs its easier to watch both in SD), #3 I honestly think some HD channels look like crap. NESN HD is pretty terrible IMHO (watching NESN in general is terrible, but thats another matter...)

Which means I can crank the Netflix data rate to its bare minimum so as not to run into the Comcast cap.

Not to drag this too far off topic, but... I'd like to be able to do the same. Is this something you're changing on the Netflix site or on the device? I've dug around on both my PS3 and the Netflix website and haven't come up with the settings.

edit: nevermind, I got it. "Manage Video Quality" - I was looking for something related to data usage or bitrate and my eyes skipped over the setting I wanted. I cranked it down to the middle setting and we'll see if that's watchable.

I 100% do not care about HD.

It's not nice seeing all the make up on the hunks in my hunky telly. It makes them not so hunky.

It's like IMAX, ugh I hate IMAX. It's so loud and in your face and gives me a sore head.

Yeah, I remember reading something about the p0rn industry being worried about HD and exposing the zitty butt-cheeks of the actors or some such. Without a little intentional blur, reality is kind of well, ugly.

As far as HD goes, I really have changed in the past few years of not giving much of a crap simply because I do not watch much TV ot play video games any more. Have a lot of outdoor stuff to do and a child.

I also get distracted looking at make up on ladies and stop paying attention. Mascara can be crazy distracting.

So you either watch it normally, or men have to sit through me rewinding things every five minutes cause I missed a bit.

My ex-wife always watched Food Network and crime shows like CSI. I tried to sell the HD idea to her, but she didn't care. Took a girl I used to date into Best Buy to see if she could see the difference in the HD tvs, and she said she couldn't see the difference. Maybe she was blind, so she didn't mind dating me. ;) Personally, I like HD for movies heavy on the special effects, like Transformers, LOTR Trilogy, and Star Trek. If it's a comedy, like those Date Movie movies, or a Mel Brooks movie, I could care less, and would gladly watch it on a old tube tv, as long as I enjoyed the laughs. :)

There's been a revolution required in TV makeup since HD became pervasive. Just slapping on a thick cake doesn't cut it anymore.

HD porn isn't really that good, I've noticed too much crap I'd rather not notice unfortunately.
