weird TR ads

Apologies if this is topic non grata, but I saw this earlier today:

Image

Then, when clicking on the boards to make this post, I saw this one:

Image

I don't block ads - just don't have flash, so I typically just see static images or text. The first one was funny and I wanted to share... seeing the second one was pretty strange.

Is this something the ad agency decided would be useful to TR's demographic? Or did they just get rotated in randomly?

OCZ SSD (w/ FarCry 3)
Newegg
Gigabyte
Corsair
and Ubuntu

Besides the Ubuntu part, they're pretty dead-on for me.

Awkward for the Op then, as I think the Adverts are personalised? I'm in the UK, and im seeing:

OCZ SSD Offer
IT Services by MDNX.co.uk
"Daily Deals" from Overclockers.co.uk
Windows 8 Advert
Currys/PC World Laptop's Advert

Pretty much what i've been googling or looking at this past week / 10 days, so bang on... *shrugs*

Yeah ads are personalized. Based on your past searches and such. Nice dude.

I get Panasonic Toughbooks which I looked at the other day, BT Infinity broadband, Corsair, NCIX, Asus, Gigabyte.

I know Scott and the crew have a policy against serving adult ads etc so I wouldn't be surprised if this had just skipped through whatever filtering system there is. If mine were truly personalised there would certainly be one or two of naked ladies ;)

If he has opted out of Google ads the ads will in fact not be personalized.

If I've been on Sweetwater or Newegg, I'm seeing ads for those shops. When I was helping a co-worker find an absolute budget tablet, I started seeing ads for Pandawill. Totally personalized, and if the OP wasn't browsing such things, maybe he ought to suspect the people who share his computer. O_o

I've been seeing those ads as well, including on my work computer. I can assure you that I have not been browsing sites or conducting searches on topics related to Asian women or mail order brides on my work computer. Those particular ads only showed up in the last couple days and I've spent most of the past week reading JIRA documentation and checking TechReport and TechDirt for updates.

That does not sound personalized to me or they have very strange notions of personalization.

It's interesting. I was getting those ads literally just an hour ago but right now it's switched to computer repair ads (which make more sense if they're targeted). I thought it was a bit amusing though.

[edit]And as I submit this post, I got the ladies again haha[/edit]

Thanks for the heads up on those ads, deruberhanyok.

We've had extra banner inventory recently, so you're probably seeing a few more Google Adsense banners than you're used to on TR. Typically, Adsense ads should be contextually relevant to the content of the site or relevant to what you've been searching or reading elsewhere from that browser. However, if you're browsing incognito, are clearing/blocking cookies, or just haven't hit sites recently that share data with Google, then you'll get some random banners from odd advertisers.

However beautiful or available those ladies might be, we really don't need ads like that on TR. We already block "adult" banners, along with several specific companies and sites that are not appropriate. I'll see if I can add these to the blacklist. If anyone sees others they consider inappropriate, please post about them here. Screen shots and/or linked URLs are needed to get them blocked.

As mentioned, we've got prime banner inventory available, so if anyone knows or works with a company or organization that would like to increase their exposure with PC enthusiasts, gamers, and IT professionals, please refer them to me.

Ah-ha, that explains it. I was used to seeing various tech ads on the site - I figured they were targeted to the site's material, like was said - so these seemed really out there. No idea what it could have picked up on, but filler ads makes sense.

Thanks for the info and the quick reply, Adam.

Well, I'm currently at work and I'm getting those Asian dating (or whatever) adds right now. Doubtful that it's related to my browsing history. The funny thing is that I'm also getting other adds that look like they might be related to my browsing... No one shares my computer.

I was getting ads about meth use in my yahoo mail box the other day. Now what the heck was I looking at for an ad like that to show for me? Guess I need to clean up my act.

Just saw another one. This time for Ukrainians:

It's strange. I checked my google settings and it's all the typical tech stuff (and some action figure stuff) I'd have expected. So I guess these are more ads getting rotated in as random filler.

Image

I have to admit, now I'm curious to see what will be next.

Traditional Polish peasant women, never married.

Assuming the ad agency continues moving west, that is. Although they did skip Kazakhstan.

I got one of these looking ads... instead it was for Courses in Gas Processing and Technology. But it looked the same as that "Beautiful Asian Woman" header one. Hm... definitely personalized!!!!!
