This was a new one on me. I was the duty officer a couple of weekends ago and the duty driver was playing on the internet on this government computer. I checked on him now and then to make sure he wasn't downloading porn or anything.

So I go outside to get some air, and I come back in and look at the computer screen. There are porn shortcuts all over the damn desktop and this flash program search engine that can't be shut down!! So I yell for the kid and asked him what the hell he was looking at (really don't feel like answering to the Colonel why there is porn on his computer) and he says, "I don't know sir, all I did was go to lop.com and it installed something on there" I spent the rest of the night deleting porno bookmarks and other trash...dumped the history/temp internet files, searched the registry, etc, but I still couldn't get the damn popup search engine to uninstall. Anyway I finally stumbled on an uninstaller and killed lop.com for good.

Maybe I'm out of the loop and didn't know about this lop.com site, but damn, that thing is just plain evil...

If you're gonna blame lop.com, then you'll have to blame their accomplice too -- MSIE. My Galeon browser repelled the evil attack like Superman's chest does to bullets.

I just now realized my IE had it. Looks like it picked it up weeks ago. Thank Yog I don't use that POS.

http://galeon.sourceforge.net/

"Galeon is a GNOME Web browser based on gecko (the mozilla rendering engine). It's fast, it has a light interface, and it is fully standards-compliant."

I'm running Mandrake Linux, giving me a whole bunch of browser options. So far, Galeon is the most compatible with the websites that I use. Websites that are broken for anything but IE tend to be worthless even when viewed under IE, IME. And since CaptiveX has proved to be most useful in installing spyware on your computer, I can live a long and happy life without it.

i would love to run Galeon, but it says that it runs on GNOME, which is UNIX-based, right? because of the requirements of my current work environment, i MUST use Windows. i have always hated IE, and used to use Netscape 24-7, but it also has become bloated, and has had some compatibility issues in the past.

any suggestions?

Yeah, my computer-uninterested (not dumb, just unintrigued) girlfriend was searching for mp3s the other day and, of course, clicked "yes" more than once without reading what she was clicking about and ended up with that lop.com desktop black eye.

I tried disabling 3rd party extensions in IE, searched for all files containing "lop" or "music," and nothing that shouldn't've been there in the first place showed up in my search.

What else should I look for? It seems to pop up whenever you start IE for the first time.

Thanks for the help...my Windows knowledge (she's running win2k) is a bit rusty; I've been concentrating on TEH LUNIX for a while now..

Ah, found some help on Ars...

First, there's an uninstall utility thoughtfully provided by the evil little portal itself.

You might also have to search your registry for http://www.lop.com and delete or replace it with http://www.google.com or something.

Someone over there also recommended disabling ActiveX controls entirely (once you've installed Flash and whatnot). How often do you use ActiveX controls, anyway?

Here's a test to see if disabling ActiveX is right for you:

True or false. You have said something like this in an AOL chatroom:

HOT_SKATER3481: ooh teh comet cursar is raelly cool!

rikki tikki tavi, there may be hope still. Although GNOME is developed primarily for Linux and other OSes that meet the UNIX paradigm, a lot of work has been done to port the GTK to Win32. I wouldn't be surprised to see Galeon for Windows, since I already use a number of GNOME-based apps in Windows. In the meantime you might want to check out Opera or even Mozilla as alternatives to IE and Netscape.

LOL @ pellmell's AOL chatroom!
