DX9

I'm thinking about downloading it and was wondering what everybody's feelings are on it.

I have been running it since it came out. I have not had any glitches......Yet. It seems fine an I have garnered some increases in benchmarks.

I read somewhere that if you install that new DX9 that the only way to uninstall it is to reinstall windows. The're still working on making it more friendly.

Does anyone know if Microsoft put DRM or Palladium into DirectX 9? I was thinking of getting it, but if it has that kind of crap in it, I will not submit control of my computer to Microsoft.

Danger - Not exactly. When you install any new DirectX, the only ways to get it off is to roll back through System Restore, to reinstall Windows, or to destroy every file and registry entry, then install an older one.

The first isn't foolproof, the second is irritating, and the third is very risky.

This hasn't changed since DirectX 3, though, so don't expect it to change now.

eckslax - Palladium will be tied to an OS, not a DirectX version. Upgrading Windows Media Player buys you DRM, upgrading DirectX does not.

To clarify:

MP8 already contains some DRM, it's just not very noticeable to most users since MP3 is still the preferred sound format.

By default, all WMA are recorded as "secure". So if you rip something, it's playable only by that machine. It's totally optional, you can turn it off in the Preferences sheet. It doesn't keep you from ripping something in the first place. While this isn't as draconian as what is being proposed, it's still DRM.

I saw on the frontpage of hardocp today that someone has made a DX9 uninstaller, but I've had no worries using the system restore facility.

It runs fine, only issue was with the texture fill tests in 3dmark were a bit jerky, so just turned down the harware accelerater slider one notch and works smooth as butter.

I'll install it when I buy a GAME that REQUIRES it-not a moment sooner.

I'm not bothering. Well, at least not till I get the R9500. I mean...the performance gains (If any) I'll get on a DX8 card aren't worth my modem's time =)

That's a relief. I now may consider upgrading to DX9 once I get Radeon 9500 Pro. I had heard about DRM in media player 8 and 9, so I don't plan on upgrading, let alone using windows media player. I think it is a real shame that Microsoft is going to resort to Palladium. Many people will simply not know what Palladium is until it is too late. Considering that most of us are stuck using Windows (gaming, etc.), Microsoft basically has us in the palm of their hand. They could do whatever they want as long as the supreme court approves of it.
